MBB: William & Mary @ WF -- 7pm ACC Network+ ESPN+

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't think masks should be required at our basketball games at this point. So, if you want to go to a game but don't want to wear a mask, buy a beer and keep it in your hand the whole time. If you're drinking, they can't ask you to put a mask on.

Granted I'm fully Vaxxed and will be getting my booster ASAP. If you aren't Vaxxed, wear a damn mask and don't ruin it for everyone else!

The last sentence indicates you already know why things are the way they are

Having bigs like Dallas that hang on the perimeter frustrates me. I’m all for stretching the floor but I’d rather he spend most of his time on the block and only flashes to the perimeter when there’s space to fill. Being 7 feet tall means nothing for rebounding when you’re not in a good position to fight for a board down low.

I think we’ll be fine this year especially with Sy but next year looks problematic. With Walton and Sy both gone we’ll be awfully thin down low.

Have heard good things about Marsh and haven't given up on Ingraham. Also, the transfer portal isn't going away, and this staff seems really good at using it. Guessing that at least one of our low post players for next year is currently with another college team right now.

I'm surprised that there weren't more people there. I would have been there if I hadn't had a meeting rescheduled. I will definitely be there on Friday. Last season was the first in 45+ years that I didn't get to attend a Wake basketball game.

Finally, somebody shares in surprise! haha.

I get the affect of the last 11 years, I really do -- I mean shit, I did write about 2,000 words about it in 2020 -- but I don't know, it seemed like there was generally more excitement. To the point about it looking the same as the exhibition: there was a difference of 44 people (exhibition was 3,754). And I realize Forbes has to win and build some stability to get people to come back. Just, hell, thought there was a little more of a floor.

Also, to the point on masks: Goddamn I'm tired of being masked throughout a game and being on Zoom for post-game interviews. Shit sucks.

I like both those guys also, just pretty unproven as your only two post players on next year’s roster. Totally agree on the portal though.

I think there is legitimate hesitancy for indoor gathering right now. So I would expect CBB attendance to be low throughout the country.

NBA attendance doesn’t seem to be taking much of a hit.

Maybe Joel attendance will be fine when people realize they can easily distance themselves from others.

We don’t have very many fans after the last decade, attendance is down across all sports and especially in college, and the fans we do have are mostly focused on football this year. I think those factors are a lot of it. Didn’t even see Kenny Herbst there which is a shocker. Didn’t make the WSSU game but the pictures make it seem like the crowd was about the same. We have a core fanbase of 4,000ish fans across both major sports and that’s about it. Need to both win and also downsize the Joel. A few years of a winning Deac team would have probably 5,000 in the seats tonight and an official attendance of 7,500 instead of about 1,500 fans and an announced 3k like tonight.

All true. Plus, we are still in a pandemic and many people don't want to attend indoor events with thousands of people. It's just the way it is. Over 1,000 Americans are still dying EVERY DAY from COVID. I was at the game, but I completely understand why some people don't want to attend large indoor events at this time.

Wait until a big game. The digital tickets and digital hoops room pass will be a DISASTER. The few folks working last night were flustered by the 10s of people coming through the door. If that isn't fixed fast, oh man it's gonna be bad.

Granted, it could be a ploy to convince fans to get there earlier.

Or they should be mandating vax cards and turning morons who don't believe in science away so the rest of us can continue living our lives.

15 home venues when everyone is playing nationally vs. 150+.

Agree with every point here. The rest of the country has proven that indoor mass gatherings don’t spread Covid as much as we thought (NBA and NHL games started and cases went down) and most of the developed world has dropped these mandates by now. If you’re uncomfortable then maybe we could have a mask enforced section or something but I would guess 80%+ of that building is vaccinated and if you are you have significantly less to worry about.

The likelihood of death for a vaxxed person is about the same as the flu. Experts have said that they don’t expect the Covid situation to get any better than this in the next few years, and maybe ever. If you want to live inside forever then that’s awesome, but I just feel like some people aren’t getting the best picture of what is actually going on anymore because they’re so attached to whatever misinformation they’re getting from one side or exaggeration from the other.

Wednesday game instead of weekend. Let’s see what Friday looks like.

With what Forbes just did with the portal why would you worry about next year?

We need a big crowd Friday to welcome Justin Gray back to the Joel, if nothing else. I'm hoping J-Gray has a great coaching career at WCU.

The lack of attendance has more to do with mask mandate and people still concerned about indoor events than it does with the past 10 years. Hell, Bzzzdelek and Manning were getting 6,000-7,000 for OOC games.
