Wake at Clemson - Saturday 11/20 Game Time Speculation

Win the conference this season. Show recruits that they can play at Wake and compete for championships.

“You’re the guy who is going to get us to the CFP” is a nice pitch for a recruit or a new DC.

i think jasir taylor is actually a lot better than it seems bc we often leave on an island against the opponents best receivers, which is very conducive to looking bad even when you are playing well.

(vs someone like zion keith who nc state actually did target just about every time he was playing man coverage at corner)

Yes, Jasir gets the toughest draw.

not saying our DBs are great but it’s the linebackers that are the main problem.

I think that would be a huge start. We absolutely have to find bigger and faster players on defense. And a new DC wouldn't hurt.

After today, i have neg vibes about the BC game. We are stumbling before the finish line.

Fire Hemp and I feel 100% better about it.

I've not really ever felt apprehensive about Clawson as our coach. Maybe slightly with Sawvel, but then we fired him and all my confidence was back. I'm not saying I could ever be at all truly out on Clawson, but if we don't fire Hemphill this offseason, there will suddenly be chinks in Clawson's armor.

I think we'll beat BC. I didn't think we'd beat Clemson this year. They went into a funk after the UGa loss but are better than their record and naturally got in together just in time for Wake. We never seem to have any luck when it comes to the timing of this game.

The mental aspect is huge. They've beaten our asses so many times in a row that it's going to take more than one great season for us to get over that mental hurdle. Thankfully we're moving toward that. Always seems odd to me that Clawson is such good friends with Dabo given all the drama queen antics on Clemson's staff. I hope he's sick and tired of losing to them. I sure am.

The entire defense has to be overhauled off-season.

To this point. What are your theories on why our defense is consistently so bad? I feel like our best fed se has gone then better each season for about four straight seasons, while our defense has gone exponentially the other way. Scheme? Personnel?

Today was the first time i felt like we didn't really belong in the same field with our opponent, in terms of the way we were getting handled. How is that possible every single year versus Clemson, but not the same against any other ACC team, let alone ACC trans that beat Clemson in the same season??

It is odd and confusing. Two red flags early today had me thinking bad thoughts: 1) when they allowed AT to be manhandled on our first 3rd down; 2) when we whiffed on two tackles on DJ allowing a long pass completion setting up an early TD

Also start of the 2nd half Bothroyd makes a highlight reel play knocking down the pitch and recovering the ball and we give it back on the next play. That's 3 turnovers we've given right back on the next snap the last 2 weeks.

Death Valley is intimidating and then you realize the refs aren't going to do you any favors, and that feeling of unease becomes contagious.

The only hope for today is it provides the kind of battle testing that good seasoned teams need to break through. Otherwise it was just a waste of a day. We have to turn the corner mentally to be "good to great" long term.

If some key guys like Roberson and Sciba return, despite participating in Sr Night, and we figure out how to play any modicum of defense, could be another special year

Agreed. The schedule is more favorable as well. Clemson and UNC at home. At Louisville and State though. Weak noncon. I hope we get Clemson early.

Seasons like this one are how you bring recruiting to the next level. No matter how good we've been under Clawson relative to Wake's history, we haven't competed on this level before this season.

To me, it's obvious we have talent deficiencies. Somehow, that has to be resolved with recruiting. But, that's a bootstrap situation. It's not as easy as it sounds.
I definitely think schemes have something to do with it. But, I have become more convinced that it's 70% personnel and 30% coaching.

Clemson can go 3 deep in a lot of positions and they may lose experience, but not much in ability. We on the other hand we do not have that luxury, even this Wake which is one of the deeper I've ever seen.

I agree with everything you wrote except for the imbalance of personnel vs. scheme. Our DL is legitimately talented and we have a few great secondary players. The way we misuse our LBs is the issue, IMHO. If we upgrade our scheme and have better LBs…much better LBs, we are a good to great defense.
