MBB Game 17: WF plays the most under-performing program - Duke Wed. 7 pm ACCN

This was obviously a disappointing game. The team just didn’t look ready. Also, our lack of shooters has caught up to us. We just have very few good shooters on this team. Our guard shooting is abysmal. To me, this is what stops us from getting over the hump.

I think we are over the ugly hump but there is still a long road in the season. Did you have us 13-4 with the only losses to #8, #12 and 2 others top 6 ACC teams on the road? We couldn’t shoot a lick tonight and had horrible live ball TOs and will play better.

I wasn’t pointing this out to say we aren’t better or even that we’re not a good team. I enjoy watching us for the first time in quite a while. The hump to me means being able to hang with top teams, making the NCAA tournament, getting ranked. We’re just not there and I don’t think we get there without some shooters.

The game was over with Sy’s terrible foul near the end of the first half. Duke of course drilled a three and started with the ball in the second.

Oh, and I'll add

6 - LaRavia needs to assert himself more often. He disappears for long stretches during all games and he's too good for that. He had 0 points on 0 shots for most if not all of the first half. That can't happen.

Bench needs to recognize and adjust mid-game. Our offense turned into the Williams show too often.

Don't think anyone played well. One of those games. Duke is quick and has size and they shot very well. Williams just had some really silly turnovers, foul shooting was not good and LaRavia got into foul trouble early. Last minute of the first half and first couple minutes of the second half was the ball game. Hate to see this at home but I think we learn from this and play better next time against them. Griffin was a killer. Everytime we would played good defense he threw up a shot with a few seconds on the clock and scored.

Agreed. I think we'll learn from it and bounce back. We need shooters, particularly when facing a team like Duke. I thought the students were great, unfortunately we didn't give them much to cheer about. There were a lot of Duke fans, particularly upstairs, makes me a little nervous about the number of Carolina fans we'll see next week.

I was at the game a well. There were some duke fans but they were so spread out it really did not seem like alot to me. I think Carolina will have a bigger crowd.

I do love his press conferences, he just nails everything whereas Manning would say virtually the same thing after a loss every time. I liked hearing from the student, thought he actually posed the best question and certainly is happy that the excitement is back.

I had 5k duke fans. Carolina will bring 7k as they always do. We will continue saving the empty seats for them thereafter for 2023.

Did you feel the building deflate at the tip? As is gonna happen naturally with old people, they sat right down. The students were confined to behind the basket as the Joels structure allows no other solution. The air came immediately out. That was the Joel at peak. I’m glad so many were able to see it as it’s been so long for them to put it in context.

Good seeing John Currie working out front watching and helping firsthand the entry process. That’s what successful bosses do. Currie will wash windows so he can evaluate things first hand. He doesn’t sit in an ivory tower thinking he is something bigger than he is.

He’s a hard working AD trying to get it right for the long haul. It’s so good to see that.

Actually we were tied with under a minute left when Manman attempted a horrible cross court pass that got easily intercepted and lead to first duke trey putting them up 3. That was a major killer when we had a chance to retake the lead. I love how as a big guy he can distribute the ball so welll, but he has to value the ball more. Second game where he had a bunch of TOs that are leading to easy buckets at key points.

Can't win with team shooting poorly from three and Williams 7 TO's.

Middle 8 drought was dagger. :(

This was Mucius.

Christian Odjakjian is the student, if you're interested in following him on Twitter (for those on there). He knows his shit.

A few thoughts on last night's game. First, the disparity in talent was significant and obvious. Williams might be the best player we have had since Collins, and we went up against a whole team of greater talent. The only equalizer between Williams and some of Duke's freshmen is age, but he still looked outmatched against their defense. He was efficient when he got his shot up, but the 7 turnovers were a result of their athleticism.

It's hard to be critical of Forbes on that basis. He's put together a vastly improved team for this season, but sometimes talent just wins out. It's not on Forbes that we had one (1!!!) made 3 when this game was still a contest. We are not going to win games against good teams if Mucius and Williamson cannot make shots. Jake needs to take a higher percentage of our 3s. I don't know how anyone can watch our defense in the first half and not recognize that this is a well coached but outmatched team.

I am impressed by what Forbes has done so far to raise the talent level on the team. I think at this point, that the talent in the program has made us a bubble team. It is concerning that Forbes will need to find at least 1, if not 2, bigs in the portal for next year. It is also concerning that either 2 of the 4 freshman guards are going to have to make a enormous leap in ability or Forbes is going to have to find another all-acc type player in the portal for this team to be as good or better next year. But I guess that is the nature of college basketball these days.

My biggest concern from last night is other ACC coaches using the same defensive gameplan Duke implemented last night and not bringing help to stop Alondes on the dribble drive.

Granted, not many other conference teams have the luxury of a Mark Williams to defend the rim down low when Alondes beats his man off the dribble but the offense stalling combined with the defensive lapses is a recipe for disaster against top tier teams.

Yeah, don't think any other ACC team (and maybe very few in CBB) has the ability or personnel to defend that way. I would have said FSU with their length, but that clearly wasn't the case.

We had open shots and didn't hit any of them.

Plus another poor night from the FT line. We had 7 more FTA than Duke, can't say that happens often and I would bet anything that doesn't happen in Cameron.

huge game this weekend against the Packline defense and another future HOF coach on the road. If it is officiated like the Louisville and FSU games (where the home team gets the vast majority of the calls) I do not like our chances.
