MBB Game 25: WF at NC State - Wednesday 7 pm - ACCN

Does Whitt have a mental block or something? I refuse to believe he is this bad at basketball.

He looked especially bad last night - some really careless turnovers. I don't know if he feels more pressure playing in his home town?? His passing, court vision, and feel for the game are his strengths - and those all failed him completely last night.

4 TOs in 6 minutes is crazy bad. Whitt was a TO machine last year, and somehow is TO rate is worse this year. He has played 43 games of college basketball; so, it's time show that he's ready to play at this level.

last night was not good. a couple of nice passes but the turnovers looked bad. Still have faith he will come around but also would like to see what Mcray can do. Think giving him 5-6 minutes would be a good thing.

Keatts had a really bad game last night. They would play zone, keep it close, then inexplicably switch to man, we'd pour on points until they went back to zone, repeat.

Their press did slow us down though. I'm assuming that wasn't part of our game plan (slow it down and just beat them in the half court), but it definitely made the game more boring.

They played zone after a make or dead ball, and man when a live ball.

It wasn't inexplicable: they'd play man after made buckets and zone after missing them.

We've played several teams in conference this year who've done that. I can't recall having noticed it before

Carter Whitt is not an ACC caliber player. He has capable ball handling and displays good court vision occasionally, but otherwise he is overmatched. His offer sheet is crazy considering, I wonder how he performed against elite competition in high school?

Good call. Not sure I agree with it, but at least it's more consistent than what I was thinking.

I was surprised how effective their 3/4 press was in slowing us down, it seemed as though Alondes and Daivien had been coached to pass out of the pressure rather than trying to drive the ball through it.

I was also surprised how passive and deliberate we were. I hated it as the game went on but I guess it worked in the end. The press caused very few turnovers and we still managed to mostly score at an efficient level once we reached the half court.

Yeah, my wife was mid-sentence trying to talk to me about summer camp plans for the kids (a bad idea in general during a Wake game), and I yelled “DUDE, GET OFF THE FLOOR!” and that was the end of the summer camp convo
Thanks for the reminder. Summer camps.

And it probably took it's physical toll on State after about 34 minutes.

Deliberate was the word I was looking for! Definitely a change of pace for Man-Man, that dude is a bull.

I think he can develop into an acc caliber back up PG that can provide useful minutes where needed. He needs to improve to get there tho.

I like McCray and Taylor a lot and the length they could provide, especially Taylor, on the defensive end.

That said, there's a reason Hildreth and Whitt are getting the minutes.

Trust in Forbes. He's aiming for 30 wins...

The thing is Whitt's game could drastically improve if the overall game slows down for him even a little bit. That usually happens with experience, so I'm not writing him off yet. His shooting, on the other hand, is quite concerning, but I could still see him being a 10/6/5 guy, which would be fine.

Agree with this assessment as Whitt has great handles and vision, but a bit undersized and not elite ACC pg speed/quickness to beat others off the dribble and doubt either of those improves enough so that he is more than a solid back-up. I also think he really struggles against more athletic/longer guards which the Pack was able to throw at him with Seabron, Smith and Hayes. My guess is his best games were against Cuse given zone and not man pressure and other teams with average guards that aren't particularly long or quick.

I agree it would seem McCray would get more minutes to see what he can do as you need someone ready to take Davien's starting role as just don't see it being Whitt unless he gets a big growth spurt or roids up (which we all assume the young man would never choose).

Yeah. But I guess Forbes decided that he didn't want his turnover prone bull to be too aggressive against token pressure.
