Ongoing gun violence/injury thread

I don't understand the logic of evoking urban gun violence as a counterpoint to proposed solutions in response to mass shootings

like, yeah, gun control would have an impact there too

the claim is always how Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, and shootings still happen, thus they're ineffectual. but a lot of the guns are purchased in Indiana or elsewhere.

when we go to our nationwide one door in schools policy, how do you think they'll assign who gets the classrooms closest to the door? like a seniority thing, or the arts and/or humanities or what?

With the performance of police in this scenario, I wonder if people will be less dismissive of abolitionist ideas. But i’m skeptical it will lead to any change.

Same. There's an opening for people to realize that police don't stop crime and police aren't obligated to stop crime. They just show up after the fact. But I don't think it will lead to pro-abolition. At best people will admit there are more bad apples.

Just another deflection.

Yeah. Red states are the borders where people are getting guns.

This argument (like most of the gun control doesn’t work arguments) just drives me fucking crazy. It’s not like we have to go through customs to cross from Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, etc. to get into Illinois.

Make Chicago and all cities single-point-of-entry.

it infuriates me when every response by some shitty republican to a mass shooting is, "well, Chicago...." Chicago barely cracks the top 30 cities in gun murders per capita. Number 1 is St. Louis, by a lot, and that's in a red state with a red governor. At least seven of the top 10 cities on the list are in red states with red governors.

And when looked at from a state by state perspective, very obvious the problem is worse in red states:

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/02/03/what-the-data-says-about-gun-deaths-in-the-u-s/

"In 2020, the states with the highest rates of gun-related deaths – counting murders, suicides and all other categories tracked by the CDC – included Mississippi (28.6 per 100,000 people), Louisiana (26.3), Wyoming (25.9), Missouri (23.9) and Alabama (23.6). The states with the lowest rates included New York (5.3), Rhode Island (5.1), New Jersey (5.0), Massachusetts (3.7) and Hawaii (3.4)."

And yes, the majority of guns used in Chicago gun murders are from out of state -- Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Texas, etc. And Chicago would have much tougher guns laws if not for the terrible Heller and McDonald decisions, but you still can't buy a gun in the city.

you know these assholes have no real argument when they just say, "Chicago" in response to any mass shooting or attempt at gun legislation.

the Onion has their 'no way to prevent this" headline as every article on the page today

yeah and I don't know what they expect people to say in response to "but Chicago" other than "yeah, let's fucking ban the guns so this shit doesn't happen in Chicago either."

"But Chicago" is just dog whistle nonsense.

OK.

According to this interview, some Uvalde cops went into the school to get their own children out while barricading other parents while the shooter was killing children in one classroom.

Brasky will be here....sitting on his ass.

can always count on Chris to emerge from his hole to taunt anyone advocating real change. biggest hard on for leftists I’ve ever seen

I, for one, will be staying home from work on Monday to protest guns. I stand with Brasky!

Require a blockchain tag on the inside of every shell casing that tracks it through its production, distribution, and sale. No different than the FDA tracking food production. If a shell casing is found to be involved in a homicide, open up civil liability to all parties involved in the process. That has no bearing on the second amendment and would instantly contract gun violence.

Just in case you hadn't fully outed yourself as a complete fucking idiot before with your "Blame the Dems" posts, you've returned with this absolute work of art.

Holy shit, that is fucking sociopathic. Did they just look at the other kids in their kids' classrooms and just say "well, good luck!"
