Chat Thread: An Idiot Abroad: Spain or Italy or France !????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My fire pit gets less use than it should. I’d rather not huddle around it for warmth, but at the same time I don’t want to sweat to death so it’s a narrow band of acceptable temperatures.

it's perfect for the mountains

Same. Our builder made that choice without giving us an option.

So I want a fire pit for our backyard instead. But I can't decide if I want to hire someone to do it or do it myself. Yard is relatively flat, so I think I could do it myself, but if I want nice pavers and stuff, I'd rather just hire someone to do it and have it look good. The quote I got was for like $8k, which seemed ridiculous.

I will come build your firepit for half of that. Ours cost like 400 dollars all in all.

We actually have a outdoor fireplace on our covered patio with gas logs that can be set to "aesthetic" or heat settings. Can even tell it how hot you want it to be. Basically, we are a little too into fire.

I have a fireplace on the back patio. It looks really nice, but not great for putting out a lot of heat and I don't recommend. When the kids stopped using the playset, I tore it down, filled the play area with gravel, and built a firepit. It's a good distance from the house, creates way more heat and gets more use.

We recently redid our previously gravel patio with flagstone for free. You’d be surprised what people are willing to give away for free when remodeling. Would have cost $2-3k to purchase that square footage in stone from a distributor.

Wait.

I misread that.

You'll do it for $4000?

How about free 99 and you can stay here for free and I'll buy the materials and also help.

I mean shit I already charge nothing for all the other work I do, how could I charge a friend.

I just remembered that way back before I was married, I flew up to Raleigh to help my buddy build a pergola in his backyard...

I had no knowledge of what a pergola was prior to the trip. I just knew that beer and power tools were involved. It was fun, but I was not allowed to use the power tools or really do anything aside from lifting heavy(ish) things. And I drank a lot.

Maybe I can make this like a Tom Sawyer whitewashing the fence sort of thing...

Let's get a group together to come down and build me a fire pit off the back porch with some pavers!

I'll provide the refreshments and until we're done, we can gather around my neighbor's Solo Stove!

The guys that did for us used some pretty heavy machinery, dug drainage, laid some special type of sand before the pavers, used 3 different size stone pavers (the biggest size massive and heavy AF), tamped them down 2X after, etc. I think it's like 15 X 30 or so with the firepit jutting out of the side furthest from the house. We felt like we got a great deal for $5K.

It was a friend of a friend who worked for one of the big stone/paver companies and did side projects occasionally. He showed up with 3 guys early one Saturday morning, and they knocked it out in like 6 hours. Incredibly impressive. I tried to help but basically ended up getting in the way and just fed them an occasional beer.
