“Inside WakeyLeaks” from The Athletic

Like Childress?

I meant for a lot of Black football player graduates who could certainly benefit from a tenth of the hookups that Elrod appears to have gotten. I actually genuinely agree that these Wake alum coaching job for life hookups have largely been a disaster, but I know a lot of very capable guys who would have loved the opportunity to get the kind of job Elrod was handed post coaching.

Warren Belin (WFU 1991), assistant coach, linebackers, under Grobe was the "continuity coach" on Clawson's staff, continuing in that spot for three more years. (Until SEC/UGA money lured him away.)

So, there were two Wake alums on Grobe's staff. One continued his coaching position under Clawson. The other was given a radio gig by Wake.

Wake has starteda number of football players on their coaching careers. Josh Gattis, current U of Miami Offensive Coordinator, is most prominent.

Wendell Dunn is currently on Wake football staff as Director of Plater Development.

Wake did not start Gattis’ coaching career. His first coaching position was at (ugh) UNC

I applaud Wake for trying. I wish they had the same energy for a lot of the Black student athletes.

Josh Gattis, A'lique Terry, Chris Barclay, Aaron Curry are some who quickly come to mind as some guys who got Wake help getting onto the coaching ladder.

Huh ? Not real sure about that Gattis and Curry statement.

Sometimes help is a phone call that gets an "out placement. That is supposed to be part of the benefits of conference ties.

Curry didn't start at Wake, but at Charlotte, under then head coach Brad Lambert, who had been a Wake assistant and is once more.

You don't always hire somebody to gt them a start in life. Sometimes you make a phone call that gets the person a job elsewhere.

Okay, but that's probably true of almost every former college football player who gets into coaching.

But not in retrospect, it’s not a good idea to carve out very competitive jobs for inexperienced sports alums just because they want them. It’s telling that Wake spent so many years and $$$ starting Elrod, Rusty, and Childress’ coaching careers and none of them stayed in coaching after Wake.

Rusty is still a coach.

I’m aware and know a lot of guys are doing well, but honestly a lot aren’t. I feel confident a lot of them would have been much more appreciative of the opportunities given to Elrod. That was my only point. Wasn’t trying to be controversial. I’ll just add that it’s okay to acknowledge that Wake has done well supporting some guys but a lot would have benefited from more support. I won’t call out people by name on a message board, but a lot of guys are struggling with mental health issues, un or underemployment, etc.

When the campaign for Cory Randolph to join the broadcast crew starts, I’m 100% on board.

Alphonso is another guy who was given a start of his career.

I knew Cory really well at Wake and run into him from time to time. Our daughters were in the same softball league and my lady friend is a coworker of his. Such a good dude.

Weird that even from Scotland he could find time to post a lot on this thread right up until people brought the receipts on his bullshit.
