Liberty @ WF - Saturday 9/17 5 pm - ACCN

Both Ellison and Turner had 7 carries and averaged under 1 ypc. Cooley had 2 runs, one a four yard gainer and the other a 15 ish yarder that was called back. He's looked like the substantially better runner all year and his HS stats are off the charts.
Exactly. I'm really holding my breath for that injury report on him. I feel like he could be special.

It’s the Wake way. Make your best running back third string. This goes all the way back to Grobe with Kevin Harris and Josh Harris and recently with Kenneth Walker, although not 3rd string, not a starter either.

This has been a consistent weakness under Clawson. Our KO coverage is not the best to begin with…so a kicker that can consistently kick through the end zone would help a lot. We have a good soccer team. Can we not trot one of those guys out for KOs?
I agree, but with as many guys as are on a FB team, I think you can afford to have at least 3 kickers … a FG kicker, Punter, and a kickoff specialist. Too important to ignore any of those areas.

Was thinking about this last night. While nobody wants to give up an accurate kicker giving up the field position we routinely do on kickoffs is a huge liability. Would be nice to have a guy that kicks the ball out of the end zone every time. I hate having to hold my breath after everyone we score.

To be fair, the pooch kicks seemed to work. But yeah. How can liberty have a guy boom it to the seats every time and we can't even get it in the end zone?

Wake’s running back rotation has always been bizarre and seems to give our best back the least amount of carries. The holding call on Cooley’s 15 yarder was absolute BS too.

I know there’s a lot of frustration but that game seemed like an absolute fluke in every way possible. Hopefully it was a wake up call.

Listening to Clawson in the post game he sounded about as tight as I’ve ever heard him after a win.

Offense
  • Cooley should start if healthy
  • There was a point in the game where I thought Clawson may put in Griffis for a series
  • Oline just got straight beat by Liberty's Dline the whole game
  • We are one of the worst rushing offenses in the ACC after three games
Defense
  • We are a top-5 defense in the ACC in yards/game allowed and top-4 in yards-per-play after three games
  • Secondary made some great plays on the ball, but CBs got turned around a lot/ bad angles tackling to give those like ~10yard stop routes into bigger plays
  • Did not understand some of the blitzes give that the Liberty QB made his best plays on the move.
  • Run defense looked solid in the first half, saggy in the second half
Other
  • Freeze had a good game plan to take on the mesh and how to attack our cornerbacks
  • Liberty is going to win at least 8 games this season
  • Kickoffs may cost us a game this season
  • Morin is a weapon on special teams
  • Dennis tested in a game that mattered and came through
  • There were a lot of Wake injuries (Key, Greene, Carson, Manginn...)

He looked like the better back last year as well.

Just like KW3 looked like our best back the year before. Our coaches don't seem to reward explosiveness.

more sobering data: our postgame win expectancy (from bill connelly) was only 37%

OLine was garbage, so was Sam, gotta expect a bounce back against Clemson

I guess it’s good to get a wake up call but I’d much rather cruise to victory rather than stack up injuries in a close one
Online was terrible

kickoffs have been great first two games I'm not sure what happened

Just rewatched the game. If we don’t try to force defenses to play back a little bit with more underneath passes…we really only have two plays they need to defend - the run and the deep ball (granted we did try some quick sideline throws but didn’t block well on the edge from what I saw).

Liberty’s corners and DL played their asses off and shut down most of our offense from just those two groups. We need more creativity in the middle of the field and we have the personnel to do it. Hope we are prepared for Clemson because this is exactly what they’re going to do to try and beat us as well.
