MBB Game 9: Clemson Tigers at Littlejohn - Friday 7 pm

Didn’t see many wake fans here tonight. Clemson has a big advantage because the renovation to littlejohn was so on point. Not a massive crowd by any means but it sure felt like it with the high slope, students on court, and smaller size. Clemson will never have 14k fans for hoops. So they’ve built for what they have and made the best use of it. It’s no surprise they’ve had a decent decade.

Is there a "shoot myself" emoticon?

Littlejohn seats over 10k. It is not small by any means.

Interesting comment. Tonight was my 18th Wake game at Littlejohn. I’ve probably been to 15 others. How about you? Have you counted the seats?
I’ve been to Littlejohn tons of times, including post renovation. I also know how to Google “Littlejohn Coliseum capacity.”

Not sure what the size of the arena has to do with 51-24 despite turning them over 19 times. If anything, it is dead last

Was busy and unable to watch tonight.

That box score looks like every Wake box score at Clemson for the last decade.

51-24 2nd half.

Ooof.

Haven't read the game thread, but just watched the game.

2nd half was pretty awful. Poor defense and bad shooting. We let the bad offense turn into bad defense and it snowballed from there.

I usually don't mind us shooting a lot of open 3s, but there were a ton of bad shots hoisted when we needed to run an offense.

I was encouraged by how deep we are. I was discouraged by the fact that most everyone picked the same night to have a bad game.

Tough loss after controlling the game in the first half. Now they have over a week to regroup and prepare for LSU. On to the next one.

Dude.

The venue had nothing to do with the outcome.

I love Littlejohn, but it has nothing to do with them having a decent decade. Come on. That's 100% trolling.

Would have won by 20 if Littlejohn was OFF campus !!!

Forbes didn't sound too pissed off with Stan postgame. Says he's giving them some time off. They do have finals this week.

If it was me as coach and my team got ass kicked 2nd half by clem's son like that I'd be livid and the team would be in the Joel immediately upon arrival tonight for practice.

Guess that's why I'm not the coach....

I'd do the same as you but we'd both end up in lawsuits for being "hateful" and not understanding the "student-athlete".

Oh Jeez, that small arena atmoshere helped them stink up the first half. I guess it kept us from building a double digit lead (which it felt like we should have had).

The following will be critical, but I do like Forbes, I like our players but sometimes tough love is needed.

  • Steve this is not the Southern Conference, this is the ACC you need to step up your game. I think in game coaching can be a lot better, see LMU and tonight. Nobody in this conference is rolling over for you, you better be prepared with plan A, B, C and D. We know you can work the transfer portal, but Whitt is gone so our only view on legit recruiting is Marsh, Hildreth, Keller and Klintsman (and a couple of other guys that are not even in the rotation). You don't need to bring in a dook or UNC class but you need at least one Frosh that can be 'the guy' this year not in 4 years.
  • Appleby - Don't know what to think. After Wisc, looked like he could play under the spotlight. Maybe a bad shooting night. On the plus side he didn't turn the ball over but he only had 5 assists on 3-13 shooting. If anything I think Wisc hurt him since it made it seam like he 'is' the scoring guard. I think he need to be a PG first and a scoring guard 2nd. Big question mark if he can handle the ACC after this. Clemson is no where near his toughest test. Play like this and Cameron will be a nightmare.
  • Carr - work on your fundamentals. :)
  • Centers (this is on Forbes) - crap we have 3 bigs they were 3-6! Six shots. Jeez Forbes (and Appleby) how does that happen? Make PJ Hall guard down low. Maybe then, he's not the high scorer (21) for the game and doesn't have the legs for 3's in the 2nd half. We were 2-13 in the 2nd from 3. We scored 7 baskets in the 2nd half. Pound the damn ball down low. You have a center that was, something like, 14-16 shooting, you let him go 2-3. Forbes if you are not going to keep Marsh in, you might as well leave him in until he fouls out. He had 5 points, 2 rbs and a block. Keller got FTS's in 11 min, but Bradford and Keller got, 6 points and 2 rbs in 29 min. We seem to only play Marsh and Bradford inside. Keller can't guard ACC bigs at this point.
  • Monsanto - shot selection, shot selection, shot selection (and if the board ever say we are going to win be cause he's going off we need to ban those posters :) ) I'd like to see us run some offense to get him an open shot. He can shoot over anyone and at anytime but, I hate to say it, make him JJ Redick. Work the ball to get him an open shot. He shouldn't feel like he has to take step back shots. Just because he can shoot over people doesn't mean we should run our offense that way. Team let Davien sit in the corner and we work the ball to him, we can't do that for Monsanto? Clock management bud.
  • Ituka - wow that was rough. 0-1, 4 tos and 1 foul in 3 min. Hope it's rust, not having played in real comp until tonight but welcome to the ACC.
  • Hildreth - Like the guy, but if he's our #2 option we have some real problems. He's a great 4-6 guy. Energy and certainly overly optimistic on his athletic abilities.
  • Overall we were out rebounded 38-24, Clemson had 15 assists to our 8
  • Last - regression to the mean? Ok explain our game. We shot 40% from 3 in the 1st half and 15% in the 2nd (28% overall). Clemson went 10% and 66% (40% overall).

Worst loss since? Clemson at home in 2021 (39 points for Wake) or the @VT game the next week 46-84?

I'm kinda glad Forbes wasn't losing his mind. Played a solid first half but Clemson also wasn't going to keep shooting it THAT badly. They went 24/25 from the line, which is absurd both in how many free throws the refs gave them and how many they made. We were down a couple when we had that run where we missed something like 5 consecutive good looks - Carr missed with nobody near him, Daivien missed with nobody near him, Keller rimmed one out, someone missed a layup - and in the meantime Clemson shot, what, 70% from deep in the 2nd half?

It's basketball - Clemson's a solid team and not many teams in college basketball would have beaten them tonight. Getting one of two between this one and Wisconsin is mission accomplished, frustrating though it may be that Clemson is good after they beat us so many times when they weren't good.
