MBB Game 14: VT Hokies @ LJVM - Saturday Noon - Regional Sports Networks

I criticize Hildreth a lot but he’s a net positive if he plays within himself. We had Davien, Monsanto and Appleby on the court with him a lot today. As long as we can get outside shooting elsewhere, Hildreth is a nice piece. We struggle if he’s a primary scorer.

IMO, he would be a net positive coming off the bench as a 3 or 4 only playing around 15 minutes a game.

Right now, he’s a net liability playing as a guard and getting 30+ minutes a game.
1) Him playing as a 3 or 4 will never happen because he in no way resembles either of those positions on offense or defense.

2) He might be our best rebounder and on-ball defender.

3) He draws contact around the basket and gets to the FT line early and often.

Who would play his minutes if he was limited to ~15 mins/game?

ETA: Saying he is a net liability right now is just objectively incorrect. Cam is awesome and I’m damn glad he’s on our team.

Cam is a very exciting, but flawed and still developing, ACC starter.

Agree with Haros that Cam is an outside jumper away from being a legitimate dude, and agree with a prior post from PhDeac (or perhaps it was DCDeac) that, as compared to his current skill level, he’s probably being asked to do a bit much too right now due to our lack of depth and on-ball creation.

This is not an intelligent take. Hildreth has his limitations, but so do all our players. Who would you give his minutes to?
I'm sorry - To whom would you give his minutes?

If he can extend his shot out to 16-18 feet and hit the occasional three, he would be a very tough player to guard. I’m sure that’s a big focus of his.

This.

Hildreth is asked to handle the ball too much because the only other player that can is Appleby. Willamson and Monsanto are both 2’s and can’t create their own shot.

For whatever reason Forbes has not recruited a true point guard(s). As a result, Hildreth is being asked to play out of position which is exposing parts of his game.

Did I just imagine #1 in white being on the court today?
Appleby can play either 1 or 2. Probably better as a 2, but forced to play 1 because there is no one else that can handle the ball.

Wish we would have landed him. He’s very good and exactly what Wake is missing.

We did land him - but he plays for the Memphis grizzlies now.

Seems like Forbes was legitimately blindsided that he’d be gone this fast.
