MBB Game 19: #19 Clemson Tigers @ LJVM -- Tuesday 9pm - Regional Sports Networks (ESPN+)

I'm in agreement, somewhat. I don't mind Tyson, personally. He's got a nice game and is a little intense. Can't fault him for that and don't think he's dirty. Schieffelin, I'd happily get in a fist fight with. Fuck that guy.
Tyson should have been given a flagrant for pulling Bradford down where he was vulnerable in the air. Such a dangerous and intentional play

I think Bradford was 1-6 from the FT line during that specific stretch
I know why we had to play him as much as we did but this right here is why Clemson hung around. That and Appleby making 1/3 on that three-point foul. If Appleby even hits 2/3 and Bradford 3/6 that's two possessions. Bradford is a huge liability on offense.

I probably missed this but - why are we not giving Keller a single minute? I would ask the same about Lucas but unfortunately didn't think he provided much for this team judging from the first few games. But really thought Keller had enough potential to be giving at least a bit of playing time here & there - I feel like it would help to have just one more additional person in rotation. Also praying Bradford works on those free throws
He’s skilled but consensus seems to be he’s just not strong enough yet. Last night for sure was ultra physical.

Bradford desperately needs pt time practicing free throws. May come a time before March that those missed FT's cost us a game!

Yeah, when Clemson was stuck on 59 and we went on that 7-0 run (to make it 72-59), we had the chance to really blow it open. From the 8 minute mark to about the 5 minute mark, there were a ton of empty possessions on both sides. They ultimately cut it back to 7 points, but you could tell that Clemson was gassed at about the 10 minute mark and we let them hang around a bit. Great defense to hold them at 59, but the offense took a few bad/rushed shots.

I was really impressed with how Clemson hung around even though Hall and Tyson were on fumes near the end. They are a very good team.

Also looks like only Ty (3) and Cam (2) had turnovers... There was a team turnover also listed. 6 TOs is the best we've done in years. And super impressive that nobody had one outside of the 2 guys that handled the ball the most.
The team turnover (shot clock violation) was about .5 seconds away from being two points for Bobi.

Bradford is also the closest thing we have to a true rim protector on the defensive end so he will continue to play despite his limitations offensively and at the FT line

The concerning thing about Bradford is he isn’t even close on most of his free throws
Does anyone have John Tom's contact info? Maybe he can give the kid some pointers. Does anyone else remember when he would attempt a FT, take the ball from the ref, take two steps back, and take a jump shot from behind the FT line?

Bradford was at like 60% on 100 free throws in college before this year, so hope he can get at least a little closer to that, but those things were ugly last night.

That was just before the stretch I'm talking about.

From 7:01 (Hildreth layup to put us up 72-59) to 3:29 (Marsh dunk) we did not make a basket. Just one Appleby FT (1-3 after being fouled on a 3).

DW missed 3 / Cam rebound / Cam missed 3
Appleby missed 3
Bradford blocked by Hall
Cam missed 3
Appleby fouled on 3 (1-3 from the line)

I'm clearly nit-picking, but that was 5 times down the court and 4 of those times we shot a 3. The other time, Hall made a sick block on a Bradford attempted dunk.

Props to our defense for also holding them to only 4 points in that stretch (Beadle FTs and Tyson jumper).

Good post. This is the exact stretch I'm referencing. We were shooting threes at inopportune times, which was odd. We had three of their guys with four fouls/each and one with three fouls. I think you drive the lane and use clock in situations like that instead of going for the knockout punch. Plus we were in the double bonus by then if memory serves. Clemson did move into a zone for a part of that four minute run which made getting into the lane a little tougher, but Ty did that on multiple occasions anyway (he just opted to kick it back outside). Cam's three with about five seconds left on the shot clock was massive. Lead got cut to seven, they had hope, we get a long offensive rebound, drain clock and bury a three to take the lead to 10. It was over for Clemson right there.

Great win for the Deacs. Time to stomp UVA and remove any doubt that we are a top team in the ACC and on a trajectory to be selected on Sunday. Thank god Currie fired Manning and hired Forbes when he did.

Yeah, some ill-advised threes early in the clock. Cam was responsible for a few of those. That is not his game and was not the time for it either. Forbes mentioned that as an aside post-game...something about the big three Cam hit (after a few he shouldn't have taken). Even when we did try to run the offense through that stretch it wasn't pretty.

I agree with this. That was a flagrant foul on Tyson. I'm not sure it was meant to be dirty, though. Bradford is a big boy and Tyson was holding on for dear life.

Bradford FT% year by year:

2021: 43-74 59%
2022: 21-35 60%
2023: 8-25 32%

Bradford was a 60% FT shooter with over 100 FT attempts heading into the season; which is a large enough sample size to confirm that he's a poor FT shooter, but not historically awful. Just need to get him back to his previous level. Clearly, it's in his head right now.

Team was not playing g good situational basketball during that stretch. Needed to drive to draw fouls and end some Clemson players game time. Early shot click threes without a lot of ball movement was not the proper strategy in that stretch.

I felt bad for the guy. He looked like a nervous wreck standing on the stripe, knowing his FT % stinks to high Heaven. He knew we needed those FT points and the pressure was bearing down hard on him.

We kept looking for the kill shot in that stretch. They weren't scoring and we had like a 12 point lead. If we connected on one of those 3s it was game over and our guys knew that.

I think we got a little tired. We played tough D 3/4s of game and did look s little tired in that stretch. We could have used Klintman more on perimeter D with his length, but he didn't really play well enough to garner more minutes. Multiple mistakes on D and poor rebounding.

We shot really well from the field....46% to their avg of giving up 39%, IIRC.

Clemson is legit and could make a deep run into the tourney, IMO. Lots of good shooters even with high minute guys, out. I wonder if Brownell teaches shooting techniques,or sends the team to a camp. Whatever it is, they all seem to have a very similar good stroke.
