‘The Blind Side’ was a lie

Wouldn’t a court have had to rule that Oher was incapable of making his own decisions to be placed under Conservitorship?

Or does that not apply since Oher entered willingly (although misled)?

but is it not possible that Oher makes no money in his entire life (especially upwards of $40 MM) if the Tuohys dont help him. . . . ?!

yall are looking at this as an either or. No doubt Oher's life and opportunity was better because of the Tuohy's. now, we can question their motivations if you want, but to act like they screwed this kid is a stretch.

it also seems like very few on this board gives anyone with a genuine faith any credit either. sometimes people can be generous and do the right thing.

again, just questions, all are possibilities, and Oher is suing them now, so they should all expect the scrutiny. . .
Just asking questions!

So why the conservatorship and not adoption? Why also not ensure he gets some money from the movie?

My Brother in Chrysler Pacifica, hallowed be thy sliding rear doors, I am also a man of faith, but to tell a child he is signing papers to become a member of the family, when he actually wasn't, isn't exactly the teachings I follow.

Maybe not the most reliable source, but was watching the Today Show this morning and the legal "expert" said by the time the Tuohy's adoption would have been processed he would have been 18 and the conservatorship was the other option to use. Lawyer stated that the Tuohy's never received any of his football or endorsement earnings and that the Tuohy's were very wealthy prior to the relationship. They mentioned the Tuohy's earned much more from their restaurant franchises than anything they gained from the movie? Opinions were that it would be hard for Oher to claim they used it for significant financial gain because of those reasons. Also said they have proof that he had told them he would ruin their character if they didn't pay him 30 million and that would be harmful to his case in court.

Adult adoption is legal in tennessee, so not sure why the 18 yr old thing keeps being thrown around

Isn't it possible that Oher becomes the CEO of Goldman Sachs if he never meets the Tuohys? Just asking questions.

Whether or not meeting the Tuohys improved his life situation is immaterial. The only reason why it would matter is in some justification for them taking money from him.

I do agree that everyone involved, from Oher to the Tuohys, needs to be scrutinized, but that's a fundamental underpinning of our legal system.

DR adopting Wes Miller and getting him to sign into a predatory conservatorship would make a lot of stuff make way more sense
Would wait to see that movie until it hits streaming, not theater-worthy IMO.

Sean makes some very factual statements in that article - things it should be easy to verify. Like, each member of the family, including Michael, received $14k from the movie. Like, their lawyers told them they couldn't adopt Michael after he was 18 so the conservatorship was the only option. Like, they had to make him a member of the family so the NCAA wouldn't block him from going to Ole Miss.... (Does conservatorship make him a member of the family as far as the NCAA is concerned?).

If those things turn out to be true then it doesn't look so bad for the Tuohys - if they turn out to be untrue then it looks really bad.

BTW, I am surprised that the movie "only" made $300M - does that include all the later DVD sales, overseas $$, etc.? It seems like it was everywhere for a while. Plus, people throw around that number, and it seems big, but I am sure their share would be based on profit, not proceeds, and I haven't seen a number for how much of a profit it made...

Also, I think the broad-brush painting of the rich as evil is lazy and weird and, for some reason, has become accepted fact. Rich people tend to be driven, egotistical, mean, and cut-throat. That is often how they became rich. Many of them are evil, just like the general populace. But, they also drive a huge percentage of the charitable giving in this country. Many of them turn to giving later in life - they were laser-focused on amassing their fortune for decades and when they stop to take a breath they realize they should do something good with it...
I know a few self-made wealthy people and they tend to be pretty tight with their money until it comes to giving it away to worthy causes and then they are extremely generous.
