GT Game Thread

I'm #TeamMizzel if we're employing this argument..

We know what we have in Kern imo, it's his 5th year in the program.

I think this is a little bit reductionist, Hartman was also struggling with some injury stuff early 2019 too which locked in Newman iirc. I also think Newman/Hartman were both very good but in drastically different ways (Newman had the phsyicality and a pretty deep ball when he had time, Hartman a much better passer overall and better utilized the RPO to pass effectively vs Newman preferring to run) so the coaches probably were just making a tough call on that one and figuring out which gave them the chance to win more games.
Then shouldn't we also have known what we had in Griffis in his 4th year?

Kern and Griffis are supposed to be different as well. Griffis was supposed to utilize the QB run more this season, but we haven't seen that. Griffis has 50 runs for 39 yards (includes Sacks). If Griffis can't run and can't get the pass off, what can he do?

I see Les is sticking to his guns that Griffis was just fantastic in fall camp and we're not seeing the same version. How much longer is this campaign of "nothing to see here" going to last?
Are we seriously going to change an entire offense because the QB can't manage the current one? That sounds like an act of desperation to me.

man I was so excited for both the Wake and Panthers seasons at the outset. I figured Wake would just keep the machine running with Money Mitch and that the Panthers would be bad but fun and I'd have a lot of hope for the future of the franchise. A combined 7 games in and that's dead.
lol, tbh I was actually dreading WFU season because I knew we'd drop on several fronts, but did think Mitch would at least not be a turnover machine 😬, lots of text chats w/ my Dad trying to convince him there was no way this WFU team was overall better than last year's, I honestly think even our receiver group isn't as solid as last years as much as we like to hype them up (Grimes has been the only big addition/development, and we lost Greene for the year, plus AT Perry is not easy to replace)

panthers definitely torpedoed fast as hell, was hoping we'd have a sorta fun season like Cam's first and have some hope for the future

I mean I'm sure he looked great with his non-contact jersey on. But, there's, uhh, contact in football.

I mean, coming into the year, he definitely looked alright. Somehow the wheels have just completely fallen off.

I think I said it already, but the VMI game last year and him doing well in that (against very bad competition) probably got everyone a little too comfy.

the Panthers one especially stings because we don't have a first rounder and very little young talent from elsewhere in the draft to be hopeful about.

Have you seen improvement from Griffis this season or are you seeing regression?

That could very well be true......but the only thing that counts is the game.

I could look the part on the first tee at The Masters!!!! Then, they'd require me to actually hit my first shot! :) But I could pull off the attire and equipment.

Is Griffis the next Hartman?
Probably not, but to place the entire blame on his shoulders after the GT fiasco is not totally accurate.
The overall performance of both the D-Line and the O-Line were equally to blame. Their performance harkened back to the first two years of Clawson's tenure.
The GT quarterback had all day to throw and was rarely rushed on his passing attempts. Griffis SELDOM had time to set his feet before the pocket collapsed.
Placing 100% of the blame on the quarterback is a standard tradition that does not apply to the GT game.

Did he win?
He covered.

35-13 Clemson. Tigers led 28-0 in 2nd quarter; they took the 2nd half off; Kearns was 7 for 18 for 126 yards. Cade Carney had WF's TD. Mike Williams who just suffered another injury in the Vikings/Chargers game had a TD for the Tigers. Also, I was wrong about the Clemson QB. DeShaun Watson was the Clemson QB. Trevor Lawrence was still in HS.

if anyone thinks this then you haven't been watching his pressers
Pressers are like lipstick on a pig. Put on best spin as possible when dealing with a sinking ship. How long before pressers become rearranging the deck chairs?

What do you think "Somehow the wheels have just completely fallen off" means?
So why not see what else we have? You have stated that you don't know if a guy has "it" until you play him in a game. Kern is 24 for 42 for 376 and a TD, as well as one helluva pass against Clemson. He hasn't embarrassed himself in gameplay. The chances of beating Clemson were slim before the season started, so why not give Kern a chance to see how he does in the offense for a full game? There is greater upside with this than keeping Griffis in and hoping he recovers.

Seriously, I think I head that Gtech didn't have a sack before they played Wake, and now you want to see Griffis and his internal clock against the Clemson defense?

gotta be honest that the Kern-Kearns thing has left me with no idea how long Kern has been around

I also think this illustrates how many bad QBs there are in college football -- Clawson and Co. have actually done a great job at the position, especially given where WFU exists in the collage football universe

the Wolf comps are all no good because he was on those early Clawson teams that were trash at virtually every position

we averaged 1.3 ypc in 2014 -- DFL by almost a full yard!

Clawson has raised expectations so if people are happy to wait til Mitch is an eighth year senior to be decent then I think you are not honoring the level of play that Clawson has achieved here

Well put.

Not only that, we typically had two capable QBs. Wolford/Hinton, Hartman/Newman. Now we're supposed to believe we have none after only seeing one of them play?

I guess I don't have much hope a guy is gonna have IT in a game against Clemson when he didn't even have it against the second string WFU defense in a spring game where QBs couldn't be hit

cookout saw him play in the Spring Game though. Case closed. #teammizzell

The Oline was mostly fine. They can't hold blocks for 5 seconds. Almost all of the sacks/fumbles were on QB decision making. And they run-blocked for nearly 230 yards.

lol, you can go watch the game too (if you're not too busy cheering for duke), it's online still... he's a 5th year QB and made all the same kinds of mistakes we're seeing Mitch make now, only in even easier circumstances
