Questions about a possible visit to WFU Football Game

Glenwood?

Yep. Glenwood Ave.

Lots of new night life development there:

Regenerating Glenwood South draws in crowds for its cluster of hip vintage-clothing stores, art galleries, and yoga studios in former warehouses along Glenwood Avenue. A buzzing after-dark scene includes taverns selling craft beer, smart DJ lounges, and speakeasy-style cocktail bars with nightly jazz concerts. Most eating options have outdoor seats and include classic steakhouses, Mexican taco bars, or sushi spots. ― Google

Charlotte - NASCAR Hall of Fame. It really is cool even if that’s not your thing. That’s the only thing I recommend in Charlotte other than the whitewater center. Charlotte blows.

Raleigh - always a ton going on. Art museum is cool. Plenty of outdoors stuff to do. Science museum is cool too.

Winston - definitely go to WF campus. Your kid may very well fall in love with it instead of Duke/UNC. That’s what happened to me. Went to Winston on a trip to see Carolina and Duke. Ended up falling in love with Wake. Plenty of other things to do. NC has a lot of outdoor activities and that’s my main thing so Pilot Mountain.
Pilot Mountain is a good call since it's easy to get to, not far etc.

I've lived here for 13 years and I don't think I've ever heard a single person call it that. Maybe the local weatherman once?
Lived there for 3. My best friend from WF won’t give up his crappy, tiny apartment because it’s in “center city.”

If you are looking to visit Charlotte I hear they have a very popular and necessary streetcar system, just like San Francisco

I liked the food stands at Optimist Hall for a quick bite in Charlotte when I went there last year.

Gopher, the best suggestion is to get the barbeque in Lexington. Forget what you think you like and discover for yourself why NC barbeque stands alone. No sauce required and get the slaw. It's entirely different from every other barbeque and you have an opportunity to see why.

If you enjoy art and would like to see how the Reynolds family lived, I'd suggest the Reynolda House Museum of American Art. You can walk there from campus. The village was part of the original Reynolds mansion and grounds. The Graylyn Estate is worth a quick look as well. It's across the street from the Reynolda House.

Pilot mountain is a short drive north and provides good views in all directions. Mt. Airy is a little further north on 52 and is all about the Andy Griffith Show. That's of little interest to me but it might be to you.

If you enjoy a zoo, the NC Zoo outside of Asheboro is definitely worth a visit.

Though not directly related to the Civil War itself, Latta Plantation in Charlotte used to be a pretty interesting Civil War-era historical location that was super easy to get to. It got cancelled a few years ago out of complete ridiculousness so it doesn't have any programs any more, but you can still walk the grounds which are nice on their own.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Old Salem (buildings from the Moravian settlers who founded the Salem half of W-S), the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts and Salem College. Hit up Winkler's Bakery for some baked treats from the historic wood bake ovens.

I grew up at the foot of the Blue Ridge Parkway and within eyeshot of Pilot Mtn, so I’ve always taken them for granted. But if you aren’t from the area or have been away for a while, you see them and know you are in God’s country. Feel the same way about the Boone area and a lot of western NC.
If you ever watched and liked "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Mayberry RFD," you should think about visiting Mt Airy, NC. That town was the setting for the shows and has been maintained as it was for the show. Pilot Mountain = Mount Pilot from the show.

If you're going to be in Raleigh, skip the Angus Barn as the quality of the food has gone downhill over the past few years. Do go to Sam Jones BBQ in downtown Raleigh. Better 'que than Lexington and you can get local beers and cocktails...even a Cheerwine bourbon slushie!
