FASHION THREAD 2023

especially with stuff like boots (i think watches too, prob some other stuff) there are real hardcore peeps who really figure out what's good and not. (this guy has almost a million YT subs mostly just analyzing boots: https://www.youtube.com/@RoseAnvil/videos).

i think the usual curve is a DTC brand makes a mark with really good quality and without good margins to get into the market. then over time they usually start dipping on quality and/or raising prices.

probably because of private equity ;)

don't really know how these DTC brands are funded, but PE did crush the quality of legacy brands like J Crew and Brooks Brothers

A DTC watch brand is near guaranteed to be a rip off. Especially those minimalist looking things, they’re like $5 quartz from the same Chinese manufacturer

I'm a complete sweater whore. Have been buying 1-2 a year for like the last 8 years, and well damn, I probably have too many now. And might be kind of addicted. But it's really the only thing I wear from now until like April.

I'm a big colorful tops, lighter neutral colors/deep blue bottoms guy. I really never wear black or darker gray tops. Just doesn't work for me. I like color.

I'm a big fan of Too Boot. I've had a pair of these for at least 15 years (not the same pair) and they are super comfortable and nice enough to wear with a suit (at least before I inevitably fuck them up to where they are too embarrassing): https://toboot.com/products/rondo-cognac

Here’s my boot game

LL Bean Duck Boot - Wear these all the time, especially in rain / snow.

Cole Haan Wingtips - Formal option.

Villa Cowboy Boots - I bought these for meeting Texas customers and now I wear them once or twice a year.

Other than in Texas - Are cowboy boots a thing with dudes or is it just a girl thing? Do you wear them over your pants or do you tuck them into your pants? Seems like cowboy boots are starting to catch on in the south but I’m not a fashionista.

my wife makes fun of me bc she claims i have too many "brown boots" that are all basically the same. obviously not true as you can see. i need more.

Yes they are more of a thing now. Not just because of Rom DeSantis. Big in the fall with jeans or brown pants. Ropers are a shorter and more casual style. Lucchese are the gold standard, while Tecovas are a more economical option. Do not tuck your pant leg into your boots unless you’re a senior at Texas A&M. I was a big fan of the Lucchese Scout boot, which is like à Chelsea/ cowboy boot combo, but could never justify the price.

Big blundstone guy rn

Also big on brown and cream clothes rn. Have a nice cable knit cream sweater that I absolutely love. Need to up the sweater game and get some more options.

Majority of my sweaters are Shetlands from O'Connell's. A few others are either Shaggy Dogs from J. Press or from Howlin' in Belgium.

The Shetlands from O'Connell's are just top-notch, tier 1 quality sweaters, IMO. They do have a little scratchiness to them, but that's just what Shetland wool is, and they're definitely the hardest-wearing/most durable sweaters. Those babies will last me decades, I think, and they do soften a bit with wear. Just love the depth and richness of color in the O'Connell's sweaters. They have lots of other options too besides Shetlands.

The Shaggy Dogs from J. Press are softer with the brushed finish.

A good round-up of brands at different price points, although the article is a few years old now.

Well now i am trying to decide between full lace up black boots or more of a chuka. And Matte or more of a dress gloss.

Damn decisions

I got these in brown years ago and they've held up great. I think I even posted about them at the time.

I bought a pair of those around maybe 2015 or so and stopped wearing them after about a year. Granted I don't really have to get dressed up for anything, but to me they are poser boots. Not really comfortable, they scuff easily, not sturdy enough for yard or field work, not for hiking, not really waterproof, laces suck, traction is awful, and quality is questionable. I think they are made for someone to wear while at a computer desk in NYC most of the day and say look at my boots while drinking a martini that evening.

After I ditched those I got a pair of Ariat rambler cowboy boots that I have worn pretty much every day September-May for 5+ years, which are the exact opposite - super comfortable, held up great, and very durable. I since got a a second pair of Ariats that are a different style - not sure what they are called but they are a lot shorter and lighter and lace-up - that I wear in the summer when I have to wear long pants.

And yes cowboy boots on dudes go under jeans.

yep. this is what i am going for. i never thought of them as being boots for rugged wear,

Calls those boots “poser” boots, yet buys cowboy boots…
Understood that I may not be riding a horse daily. But if I am on a tractor or excavator, or generally at a jobsite or in the woods, which happens a few days per week, then they do serve a functional purpose. Last Monday I just about stepped on a copperhead in the woods for work and was glad I had them on.
