I'm worried that in the NIL market, Wake won't be able to compete at a high level in football.

To be fair, but for a team here or there we haven't been able to prior to NIL. Thinking that a tiny school will raise enough money to outspend our behemoth university competiton - seems unlikely. Them the facts. Can't say I love it. But the writing is on the wall. Unless one of ya'll is a wake forest Bill gates - we're not in a good place with this nil stuff.

Yeah, like I said, anyone that thinks this is a positive or even a push between positive/negative, is kidding themselves. NIL just puts us further behind the 8 ball. I honestly believe the great improvements we've made in facilities have been made almost a non-factor by this.

Reminds me of UNC hiding baseball players on Regent's schollies.
On top of getting the NC legislature for years to recognize out-of-state athletes as in-state for tuition purposes, which meant the Rams Club only had to ante up $5K or so for a 5-star basketball player from Indiana, while the Deacon Club is paying double that or more for a 1/2 baseball scholarship for a kid from Kernersville.

It seems to me the shifting of the college athletics NIL market over the next decade or so will result in lower coaches salaries and lower administrator pay, particularly in bloated AD offices, but all over universities as well. College athletics had been all about some old guys coaching and administrating making a shitload of money while the players who provided the labor got nothing. Now that we know the players are going to get paid, won’t that money eventually just flow away from the Assistant AD for Some Bullshit Thing to the player? The myth is of the star coach will probably dim too. The market as it is now won’t look anything like it will in a few years, IMO.

We'll be the Pittsburgh Pirates. As soon as a young player hits a double, the Yankees will sign him away.

The money for NIL and for coaches theoretically isn't coming from the same place. For now.

Proud part of the problem then lol

Gotta love ogboards.com... how many P5 schools have fans proudly chest thumping over not providing resources needed to compete at the highest level?

It's almost like some of you clowns want the revenue programs to go into the shitter just to say "I told you so - Wake sucks" so you can spend more time rooting for your second (or first?) favorite team

A school like Wake often has to think out of the box/ahead of the curve to survive or thrive. What would that look like in this NIL world?

This is an angle I hadn't given much thought. It does make a lot of sense. Guys are going to bounce once they have the chance. We develop them and someone else gets their best years.

I've not given much attention to it but how has Elko been so successful so fast? Success at duke with most of the same academic issues we face but minus the good facilities (their set up and fan support really suck) seems to be an indictment on something about us. Not sure what exactly
My guess is Elko left Wake for big time programs. Got exposure to good and great talent. He got accolades every where he went. He saw what it took to win at P5.

Clawson was a little guy who played at a little school and coached at same. Wake was the pinnacle, a school that straddled the line between D2 & D1. He's fb smart, hardworking, great organizer. But he's never worked at Tennessee, Clemson, and Michigan. He is now lost as to identify the problem. Much like "the forest for the trees", everyone saw Kern as an obvious option worth a look. Clawson couldn't see it from his vantage point. Either a flaw or stubornness.

Another possible factor is Elko likely gave some firm speeches to Duke alum in the NBA and challenged them to "give back" and help build the other big revenue sport at Duke. Besides the advantage here, Duke also has more grads, hence more millionaires. Look at who's starting and having an impact for Duke this year. It's enough to turn a program around....and it has.

Dave Clawson literally worked at, and was fired, by Tennessee as their OC.

opportunity cost on everything

i'd just rather spend my money on other things than marginal improvement to my favorite college sports team

if Wake sports die I'll be okay

RTQ can perhaps confirm or deny this rumor. I have heard from a fairly reliable source that SMU has raked in a shit-ton of money (north of $50 million) for their NIL since being announced they are joining the ACC. Again, my source heard this directly from an SMU person associated with their athletic program and not second hand. Just imagine the frothy number of dollars in a market like Dallas. You get a few folks who want to win college football games? Welp!
