So, how is Baylor doing it?

How different is the current Baylor situation than the WF situation with Curry/Phonz? Besides being in TX I don't see much of a difference. Having Curry didn't suddenly make 5* LB's line up to come to WF. Just because you have one amazing, nationally known player doesn't mean you will suddenly become Bama lite.

I never said Baylor is going to turn into a powerhouse. All I have said was "how do you know they aren't going to continue to improve?" His point was that once RGIII is gone, so are they. I simply asked, how do you know?

Shades of Billy Donovan, 10+ years later. That one turned out to be little more than sour grapes by those who he out-recruited.

not getting caught and not doing it are different concepts.

Baylor is a pretty damn good school.

They also have had a good run on bringing some outstanding athletes into their programs. Couple this with good coaches and you have a good recipe for success.

Do not get all the negativity on this thread. I wish we were having their current run.

Baylor is not that good of a school. There are certain departments that are excellent, but on the whole it is not.

I know tons of kids who are horrible students who not only got into Baylor but made pretty decent grades.

I had C+ average at Wake and made straight A's in my summer school classes at Baylor

So you're saying you still think Donovan is dirty? Because I haven't even heard any of the whispers in a long time. All I'm saying is that all there is on Drew is pure speculation, just like it was with Donovan.

It's comforting to know I wasn't the only one!

It's not LOWF to point out that Scott Drew is possibly the most despised coach by his peers in the entire country and that anyone who follows the AAU scene even a little bit knows the reputation that Baylor has built under him as being one of the shadiest programs in the country.

Football is a different story - Briles is a very good coach and nobody else wanted to take a chance on RGIII as a QB. He also was sold on the opportunity to run track with Baylor's traditionally very good program (which he only did for one season). Worked out brilliantly for them, I would say.

This is a great post

I didn't say that. The SEC is the home of "If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'."

I think he has to cheat less now, but I don't put it past him.

Drew is Calipari lite. Because Drew is so detested it is more likely that he will get caught than Billy D.

I hear you but I don't think you're remembering how much other coaches HATED Billy Donovan when he was building his program at Florida in the late 90's. Remember the SI story about it?

Not sure if it was mentioned elsewhere in the thread--saw on pg 1 someone speculating that Baylor Med helps improve the academic standaing of Baylor U--but just wanted to point out that Baylor Med is not affilitated with Baylor University. Used to be a long time ago (and in fact there was speculation they would align themselves with Rice a few years back, though I think that fell through), but it's been a completely seperate institution for awhile.

I thought Drew's dad was squeaky clean at Valpo? How did the apple fall so far from the tree? Or am I misremembering the dad's reputation?

An article in today's NYTimes regarding Baylor's recent success. A couple of choice quotes:

Kenneth Starr- "I know my role. Keep the donors and alumni happy."

"Instead of making phone calls, we're getting phone calls," Art Briles said. "That hasn't been the case the last four years. Some student-athletes that were warm a month ago, a week ago, all of a sudden they're sporting a Baylor cap. They've heated up the process with us."

From same article:

"Griffin, who was born in Japan while his father was stationed in the military there, also ran track, and as a 17-year-old reached the semifinals of the national Olympic trials in the 400-meter hurdles. He ran for Baylor as a freshman, but stopped to concentrate on football."

"Going to the Olympics is a dream that you don't let go of until your body tells you to," he said. "Let's just put it this way. I'm not closing the door on the 2012 Olympics, but I'm certainly not running through the door, either."

"You don't come to the university and say, I'm going to be the face of the program, I'm going to be the one everybody looks to for answers to all the questions, and I'm going to be the guy that everybody can rely on," he said. "But that's what it's turned into. I don't shy away from it. As a quarterback, that's what you have to do. You're going to get all the praise and all the blame as well, and we've gotten a lot of praise this year. I'm proud to be the ambassador."

Baylor struck gold with Griffin

BTW, has Wake ever had a player receive votes for the Heisman?

We had the equivalence of the heisman with Tim Duncan and the wooden award.

And close to it again with Chris Paul. We had Tim Duncan and Chris Paul at Wake for 6 seasons in 12 seasons from 1993-94 to 2004-05 and failed to capitalize on it.

I like Briles a lot and I concur with RG3 coming in because it was the only program that offered him as a QB. That said, with the likes of Lache Seastrunk and Ahmad Dixon on that squad, don't think that Willie Lyles doesn't have his hand in the pot at Baylor.

Lache ended up at Baylor? Yikes...

I've thought Briles runs a generally clean program, but they seem to take a lot of jucos and transfers with bad backgrounds. Phil Taylor is one example from recent years, and I think they have a couple juco CBs this year.

Was listening to XM radio recently and a caller claimed that Texas only recruited Griffin as a WR and did not recruit Andrew Luck (both Texas HS QBs) because they liked GJ Kinne (who transfered to Tulsa) and Garrett Gilbert (who committed early from the class of 2009) better as QBs. Oops.

BTW, here are Scout's 5 and 4 star QBs from the 2008 HS year (some big time hits and a few big time misses; Tommy Dorman?):

1. Terrell Pryor - OSU
2. EJ Manual - FSU
3. Dane Crist - ND
4. Andrew Luck - Stanford
5. Mike Glennon - State
6. Landry Jones - OU
7. Blaine Gabbert - Missou
8. Tommy Dorman - A&M
9. Nick Crissman - UCLA
10. Sean Renfree - Duke
11. Star Jackson - Bama
12. RGIII - Baylor
13. Kyle Parker - Clemson
14. MarQuies Gray - Minnesota
15. Derron Thomas - Oregon
