I've got FANTASTIC news everyone! Wake Forest Basketball just won the Super Bowl!!!

Back when wake forest basketball almost mattered, UNC fans loved to say that when we beat them it was our national championship. Now we have a coach that says essentially the same thing when we play the worst team in the ACC. I'm not sure which is worse, that we have [Redacted] as a coach, or that our national championship went from beating the best team in the conference to potentially one of the worst teams in the history of the ACC. Or, just the fact that beating boston college on the road might well be the closest we get to a national championship for quite a while.

:panda:

with all due respect, sir. bzz coached a one win wake team last year. bc has two this year. you will not take our record away.

I take it to mean he and the players saw the BC game as their Super Bowl because it's one of the few games they knew they could actually win.

[Redacted] shouldn't have said it, but I'm not upset that he did. I'm upset because it's true.

Leonard Hamilton just said tomorrow's game versus Wake "could be the most important game of the season for us."

I'll compare this to footy (soccer), because that is what I know best.

When Man United go away to the "smaller" clubs the fans and the team play like it is their "Cup Final" -- basically a Super Bowl -- and play their socks off for that game because such a big opponent is in town.

Manchester United have won 12 out of 19 Premier Leagues since 1992.

Jeff [Redacted] says that we played our "Cup Final" against a team projected to finish 12th in a 12 team down ACC.

Way to set the bar high, coach!

Now I understand, you are a soccer bunny! Seriously, you, Chris L. and a few others need to take a vacation to get some perspective. Recruiting is going well and the team has played better than most expected to this point. I am not trying to make a personal attack (obviously you care about the program or you wouldn't be posting so much) but the constant negativity (in the face of things like actual road wins) can't help the program and is quite frankly annoying. Everyone wants for better days and no doubt BC is a weak team, but playing on the road in Boston two days after playing at Duke can't be easy (travel, potential let down game). Give a little credit where it is due. If we get blown out tomorrow, state your greivances. If we win or lose by 2 at the buzzer, consider a little praise. Some objectivity would be appreciated.

That's exactly what I do. When we get blown out, you get all bent because I don't sugarcoat it. I have actually been quite positive about our win over BC.

I praised the team and am very happy about the win. That was a terrible quote tho, IMO.

I don't even think I was that bad on this thread. I've mainly been having fun with it.

I don't get bent out of shape, I just think I have a longer term perspective. I was in school in the late '80s and maybe view thing through a different lens because of it.

It was more frustrating to me watching us piss away the opportunities of a lifetime (never getting past the sweet 16 with CP3 and later losing to Cleveland State with 4 NBA players on the same team) than watching us struggle back then with no talent. Some combination of the two (actually playing above our potential with some good talent) would be better than either IMO. Playing above our potential with loads of talent would be even better. Hopefully, we'll get there, but I have been watching for over 20 years and haven't seen it (save for 1 ACC tournament performance).

I was in school in the late 80s as well.

I really hope [Redacted] is successful. I am highly skeptical. He has never had much success in his prior stops and I don't know if he has the personality to recruit consistently. We'll see.

Certainly he's got plenty to prove, but things at least seem to be going in the right direction finally. I would have preferred Brad Stevens too, but I think Buzz can succeed here. If he doesn't it will mean much more pain, so I try to remain supportive and optimistic. I think the balance of this year and next will tell us a lot. Success breeds success, so if we can get back to the top half of the league next year or, at worst, the year after, hopefully the recruiting will be easier.

Define "succeed". And please tell us what you have actually seen thus far to lead you to believe Bz can succeed here.

We really should have a list of all the things we've been told Bzz can't do.

So far incorrect on:
- Can't recruit
- Can't win on the road at BCS schools
- Can't win on the road in conference
- Can't/won't win x number of games this year

Waiting for:
- Teams can't rebound
- Can't went in the post season
- Can't succeed at Wake

I'm sure others can fill in the rest.

This is helpful....thanks for the list.

- Can't recruit (not yet proven, but hinted at not being able to get top flight talent. Focuses on "under the radar" types).
- Can't win on the road at BCS schools (empirically proven by existing record)
- Can't win on the road in Conference (empirically proven by existing record)
- Can't/won't win x number of games this year (jury still out)

- Teams Can't rebound (empirically proven by existing rebound stats currently and historically).
- Can't win (sic) in the post season (empirically proven by record)
- Can't succeed at Wake (jury is still out but "succeed" must be defined).

1) Can't recruit -- his three recruits this season aren't exactly tearing it up, but they are freshmen so still too soon to judge them. Which makes it ever further too soon to judge the players coming in next season; one way or the other.

2) Can't win on the road at BCS schools -- Jeff [Redacted]'s away record against BCS conference schools since 2005:
2005/06: 0-2; losses at Washington and Illinois (in the NIT)
2006/07: 2-1; wins at Stanford and Colorado, loss to Duke
2007/08: 0-9; loss to Winsconsin OOC and lost all 8 Big XII road games
2008/09: 0-9; loss to Stanford OOC and lost all 8 Big XII road games
2009/10: 1-8; loss to Oregon St OOC and lost 7 of 8 Big XII road games
2010/11: 0-8; lost all 8 ACC road games
2011/12 (to date): 2-3; wins at Nebraska and BC, losses to Seton Hall, Maryland and Duke

TOTAL: 5-40, .111

3) Can't win on the road in conference -- Jeff [Redacted]'s away record in conference since 2005:
2005/06: 4-4
2006/07: 3-5
2007/08: 0-8
2008/09: 0-8
2009/10: 1-7
2010/11: 0-8
2011/12 (to date): 1-2

TOTAL: 9-42, .176

4) Agreed.

Beating Nebraska and BC on the road is a start, but it doesn't really prove anything. Bragging about that is kind of pathetic.

aw crap. for that one post i began to believe. thanks for ruining it with reality dv7 and ish.

beating Nebraska and BC on the road with our current lineup and taking into account how many years those guys have left at Wake and the class coming in - is significant.

I'll say this over and over:

Last year sucked, this year is better, next year will be better than this year, the year after that will better than the one before.

This is obviously not locked in stone, but eyeballing the roster over the next three years, seems the most likely.

The questions become only: how good are we in 2013-14? And what is Bzd's ceiling as the leader of the hoops program at Wake?

Only when those questions are answered will our AD - be it Wellman or anyone else, determine Bzd's fate. If we are a bubble team in 2014, I think Bzd will be let go or nudged out the door if Wellman believes another firing will do more harm than good to the program (a la Tacy's dismissal). If we are solid NCAA tourney team, Bzd gets more time. if he has exciting tourney success, he gets extension. Simple as that.

Everything else is just spit on popcorn.

You think we can wait to give [Redacted] an extension until after the 2013/14 season? This assumes he earns it that season, of course.
