That's my favorite, travel is such a government black hole. We had someone get approval while waiting at the airport to buy the ticket the day of, it was to India.

Do you think the solution to governmental waste is actually paying more for certain things? Like I'd be cool with the best and the brightest taking over the IRS and other agencies. But not who they get for $60k/yr

Maybe not the IRS but idk enough about it

But yea there have to be some dumb bureaucracies that could use smarter ppl who stay away because of $

Like I got a cold call last week. Apparently we can claim an R&D tax credit and get a couple hundred thousand bucks. Our CPAs confirmed it. Sounds like a brilliant governmental plan. We didn't do it in the past because my predecessor was lazy.

It's also on the IRS Dirty Dozen list and is a great way to get popped for an audit.

But you do you.

Yup, but if you can handle an audit you're good, that's what they pay me for, and we've also been through plenty of audits in the past

When talking to the CPA firm dude who handles that part of the tax credit whom I'd never spoken to though, he said the words I've been waiting to hear my entire life:

"So are you an architect? What's your title, you don't sound like an accountant"

You know I always wanted to pretend I was an architect.

What's the outfit called? My boss wanted to try it to potentially score a win so I said fine. Hasn't been the best process. Also we had already been claiming the credit but were conservative with our estimates.

Some place outta Houston. They're contingent fee though so what they do is just make riskier assumptions to get themselves paid more. Our cpas (Barto) have a fixed fee engagement so while a chance we get less, are inherently more conservative.

Could you have more fun with $1000 at:

A casino
Dave & Busters
A strip club

Or having dinner with some accountants at a Buffalo Wild Wings

I'd say strip club. Dave and busters sounds better on paper, but alotta the newer games are hella lame. Barcade is the answer but are we talking comparing one trip or 50 trips with $20 compared to however many trips to drop a grand at a strip club

I'm taking the Casino. I like to gamble, and you can play it slowly to make the bankroll last. Plus there could be decent restaurants or shows to break up the hands of blackjack and poker.

This hotel does a very tight sheet tuck

I feel like I'm gonna pull a muscle kicking it off

One trip only gotta spend all $1000

casino, followed by D&B.

as for government 'waste' - no humble brag, just matter of fact: I could make twice as much as I do by going to the private sector. Easy. That being said, I love my 40hr work week and I make enough that I'm not concerned about having enough money. I'm probably in the minority, but that alone (work/life balance) is enough to keep me in government vs. making the leap to private.
