Spoke today with a Wake grad who has a strong family connection to the current athletics administration. He told me that the rule of thumb for Wake athletes is "if you show up for class and put the effort in, we'll do everything possible to make sure you graduate". I have zero problem with that, b/c that is in contrast to 18 years at UNC where the practice was "we'll get you in the right classes, you won't have to do any work, and we'll make sure you stay eligible". I'm proud to say that my university is not just concerned with keeping athletes eligible, but also feels an obligation to make sure that those who show up for legit classes and put the work in get the necessary help to leave MSD with a degree that was earned.
