Official 2022-23 College Basketball Thread: UCONN - One Shining Moment

Nobody takes five star high school stars and turns them into decent third year role players better than Duke basketball

That seems to be what happens to most of those who don't exit to the NBA after one year.

True. Even ones that stay another year and do well at Duke falter. Mark Williams stayed two years at Duke and I thought he’d be a nice player in the NBA. He can’t even get on the court for the sorry Hornets.

That's a pretty good fucking job if you can stick around for 8 -12 years. Zion Williamson should do even better than that.

And no college program is determining the fate of your college career in 9 months on campus.

Watched the Duke game with my neighbor (a bandwagon Duke fan who is otherwise a great dude), and he had similar thoughts on Roach.

"If you're that highly ranked coming out of high school and you're still at Duke for your JR year, you are not a very good player."

Backcourt going to limit Duke's success this season. Frontcourt is solid and likely continues to improve as the year goes on.

Decent third year role players in college basketball. Not the NBA
Okay, misunderstood your post. But we can probably agree that they're not true 5-stars if they're still in college after two years.

If you need a break from football and frustrations, our basketball team isn't playing enough, then try enjoying this great moment in Deacon history...Wake vs DePaul.

No 3 pointer, no clock. More obvious set plays on O. Short and midrange jumpers ruled as did the use of the backboard. And the half hook, we see by Hildreth, was born. It was used a lot in this game but Kenny Green's feathery touch was a beautiful form of it. So were his quick dunks.

This team had no h.s. super stars. Cline was the highest rated recruit, a country boy from W.Va but went to h.s. in Kentucky (which led to our eventual recruitment and signing of his friend Todd Maye). The majority were country boys few other schools knew of, yet close enough for Tacy to get word of through his contacts.

Rudd couldn't play long as a freshman because he couldn't dribble without losing the ball. He'd played center for a 1A h.s. He is a key player here as a jr. Freshman Bogues was laughed about by opponents, Garber was a 6th man from Skip Brown's h.s., Teachey from rural eastern N.C., Danny Young from Raleigh. (A steady PG who rarely had a TO and who had one of the longest NBA careers of any Deac.) John Tom's was a j.c. transfer, IIRC. Green was from a tiny country town in Florida outside Orlando, known as Eustis.

Enjoy

Thanks for the link. Tonight was the first time I have ever seen this game in its entirety. Knowing a Deacon team came back for an OT win is much different than seeing a team come back for an OT win. Thanks.

Each of the teams that defeated WF have played pretty well:

LMU #112 (10-4): Were rated at #144 when they played WF, up 32 spots. Also have a win over #85 Nevada.
Clemson #62 (10-3): Were rated #61 when they beat WF. Also have wins over #36 Penn State and a dominating win over #96 Richmond by 28
LSU #76 (12-1): Were rated #62 when they played WF (played an unbelievably bad OOC schedule (#344), WF was LSU's best win until last night
Rutgers #23 (8-4): Were rated #32 when they played WF.

Also, a few of the teams WF beat have played reasonably well:

UGA is 10-3 (#99)
Wisconsin is 9-2 (#36); they have wins over #66 Stanford, #60 Dayton, #67 USC, #25 Marquette, #22 MD, #37 Iowa
Utah Valley is 9-4 (#105); they have wins over #91 BYU (on the road) and #46 Oregon (on the road)

I was at Wake at the time (I'm old) and participated in the party on the Quad into the wee hours that evening. Easily the biggest event in my 4 years at Wake. As for Tacy, he was a good Xs and Os coach but was a quiet introvert as a person, and that's why he struggled in recruiting, especially in his later years. I know 1 of the UVA players from the mid 80s (who was from a small town in WV), and he was choosing between Wake and UVA. He picked UVA largely because his phone conversations with Tacy were extremely awkward.
