Officially Gasparilla Bowl Thread - Wake Forest vs. The University of Misery

Hell of a victory by the Deacs. Gutted it out when they needed to, which makes me happier than I was earlier.

Until the last scoring drive, that was one of the worst 30 minutes of offensive play-calling that I can remember and I've been a dedicated fan for more than 30 years. If I never see us in shotgun on a 3rd or 4th and inches again, that would be more than OK by me. It just doesn't work, has never worked, and likely never will work consistently -- if the plan is to run the ball. Can't tell if Sam was making the wrong reads or the plays that were called were just that bad, but by the end of the game, I was praying that someone would hire Ruggiero away from the Deacs.

And I vote we put 100% of our NIL $$$ towards a new kickoff specialist and punter. Hell, make an offer to the current student body and let anyone that can kick the kickoff halfway through the endzone receive a full ride on the spot. Our Kicking game is atrocious, with the exception of Dennis's FG/PAT prowess, which is good enough (not great). Getting the best damn kicker we can find in the transfer portal should be priority #1, maybe even over our defensive backs. I feel more strongly about this than I do about needing to offer more marching band scholarships.

Merry Christmas!
We luckily have a kicker coming in from HS who looks to be able to handle kickoffs.

Dennis missed an extra point tonight, how long had it been since we’d missed an extra point? I know Sciba never missed one, so it had to be a long time.

Just got back to my hotel from the game. Haven’t read this thread or seen any of the broadcast, but a few observations:

-I’m not generally one to bitch about refs, because I think it ultimately evens out in a game, but it felt like 1) they were super trigger happy calling offensive holds and 2) we got screwed on numerous spots. Like, a full yard short of where it should’ve been sometimes. Which in several cases, put us in third and a yard, when it should’ve been a first down. Which leads me to…

-Our 3rd down offense generally made me cover my eyes most of the game. I feel like we’ve been saying this since the Lobo days, but the shotgun/slow draws on third and a foot…kill me.

-I thought the defense played better than some recent games. Several nice downfield pass breakups, more disruption in the backfield, more sacks, etc.

-We had more fans than Mizzou

-I didn’t know Florida got this cold. Spent way too much money drinking double Jack and Cokes all game to stay warm

-Clawson super emotional in the postgame trophy presentation interview. Proud of the team for still working after stumbling from the 6-1 start, proud that guys who could’ve opted out felt like the game was important and decided to play, etc. Wants to make sure the legacy of this group that is graduating is that they took the program to a new level, and now the goal/challenge/focus is for the next generation to take it a step further.

Good group of fans there - the middle thirty minutes of the game were frustrating, but ultimately felt great and really glad I made the trip

Agreed on all. I was proud of our crowd. We really showed up. I met a few FL Deacs. Caught up with some Tampa area Deacs. Good times. Hope we end up in another Florida bowl next year.

oh no, i stared too long at the deacon and now his mouth looks really weird and i can't see it normal anymore. how's he doing that? it's like his face is sideways.

Think Conor tweeted not since 2017
Mike Weaver missed four (!) in 2017; Sciba never missed one -- though I'll cop to some laziness in not looking up whether anybody random missed one that Sciba didn't take in the last four years.

Reposting from Twitter but this really stood out to me:

Ryan Smenda Jr. had 11 tackles tonight, giving him 117 this season. That's the most a WF player has had since Jon Abbate had 120 in 2006. Smenda is the first Deacon to finish a season with triple-digit tackles since Justin Strnad in 2018.

This is where you're reminded Smenda had to miss the opener because of the bullshit targeting call from last year.

Defense looked really different at end of the game when they were in pure get the quarterback mode. I wonder if Wake's offense contributes to this?

The younger defenders play against Wake's RPO so much, and it is designed to make defenses pay for being aggressive. Once the defense acts, the QB reads that action and makes it :wrong."

Been out of loop leading up to game, but Clawson mentioned being disappointed in what mizzou coach said. Anybody know?

I knew Drinkwitz had said that, but what did Clawson say in response? Was it after the game?

Drinkwitz is a smart ass and a punk. I am an ASU grad and was so happy to see him leave. Might be a good coach but I have no respect for him.
He is a mediocre coach and will be on the hot seat next year

ON THE COMMENTS BY ELI DRINKWITZ ABOUT A LATE-CYCLE RECRUITING FLIP FROM WAKE FOREST TO MISSOURI

Clawson: “I like & respect Eli. Everyone views their job differently. I think my job as coach at Wake Forest is I want my players modeling me, and modeling sportsmanship. I don't know if he was trying to be funny or cute, I just don't think comments like that are necessary. People have different personalities, but that's just not something I would do. I was a little disappointed he did that, but he's a good football coach and I do like and respect him. I just don't think anybody on our staff really appreciated those comments."
