Ongoing gun violence/injury thread

Hey, prophecies are prophecies, even if they are self-fulfilling.

It feels like the Republicans gear up to deal with this shitty world that is in their image and that they perpetuate, while progressives work to create the world that everyone should want.

It's no surprise that Republicans are so doom and gloom when all of them seemingly want guns to be handed out, excuse me, sold on every corner, the earth to burn, to roll back reproductive rights, and question the integrity of our elections through lies and conspiracies.

Curious that you would view the breakup of our two party system as a “breakdown of society”. You should should do some self reflecting on that.

I'm 68 and balled like a baby when I watched a Sandy Hook mom interviewed last night. 10 fuckin years ago and not one thing has changed. Except that it seems very easy to get an assault weapon. I can't imagine what it would feel like to learn that an "active shooter" is at your kid's school, or in my case, one of my granddaughter's school.

Record number of gun sales in 2020. Millions more guns since Sandy Hook. Don’t you feel more safe?

Yeah. If you weren’t so busy having fun with your electoralism fantasy game you would recognize that this stalemate is intractable and the only way out is to reconfigure. All your whimpering about leftists voting for Dems is just begging us to pull the knot tighter for you when we are trying to untie it.

How is electing reasonable Senators more of a fantasy than completely reconfiguring our government?

Oh Ok. Dissolve the GOP and the Dems and then you get back to Party A and Party B and you are in exactly the same spot. It's just as unrealistic.

And how are you getting to this point without a breakdown of society. Something tells me the resulting government wouldn't be pro gun control.

Our nations hyper-partisanship is very real and becoming more dangerous by the day. Our nation has divided itself on these 2 party political terms, and any electoralism that occurs can only occur along that division, and accomplishes nothing but to further that divide. Neither party is willing to forfeit, and we are doomed. We normalize worsening and worsening conditions until we are fighting over the thermostat in hell.

I for one am sick and tired of "mental illness" being the go-to "excuse." Studies show again and again that people with mental health disorders are typically LESS violent than society in general. If they decide to become violent, it is almost always toward themselves by acting on suicidal thoughts and impulses.

From personal experience I think mental health is actually part of the problem. I've seen my own child, diagnosed bi-polar, developed paranoid thoughts that a group of kids at school were out to get them, then act on those thoughts by bringing a pocket knife to school and threatening the other children. Fortunately no one was physically hurt. Easily could have grabbed a gun if I'd or her mom/stepdad kept any in the house but we all agreed a few years before that it was too dangerous and stepdad gave his guns to his brother. (See Brasky I am personally doing something useful to protect other students and teachers.) That is just one anecdote, but my reading on the disorder tells me that, with bi-polar at least, afflicted people, especially untreated, can have manic phases where an idea gets stuck in their head and they cannot get it out. If the idea involved violet acts, an untreated kid has a pretty high probability of acting on that notion. Having said all of that, the key to safety here was even though she was in treatment and medicated at the time, we eliminated all access to weapons more dangerous than a knife and no one got hurt. So even if we insist that mental heath is part of the problem, limiting access to guns is still the solution.

Unrealistic? So is thinking that armed guards at schools would stop this when the shooter shot two officers before he went in the classroom and the guard at Stoneman Douglas ran away. So is saying a teacher with a handgun can take down a guy in body armor and two automatic rifles. So is calling this a mental health issue, when Republicans voted against expanding mental health care to uninsured. So is Republicans saying they are for common sense gun reform, when just last year Texas allowed unlicensed open carry. So is saying red flag laws will help, when Texas Republicans voted against that after the El Paso shooting. So is saying they will work to ensure this never happens again, when it will.

What is realistic is needing a wholesale change in gun laws like most civilized countries. If they can do it, so can we. We are the outliers on this issue.

I completely disagree with that hypothetical. Most western 1st world nations have more than two main political parties, and they have political systems and governing requires formal unity between multiple parties. We have “The Squad” and “The Problem Solvers Caucus” and other trite bullshit

Do Republicans support giving teachers AK47s to protect the schools? Because I'm pretty sure otherwise, even arming good guys with guns won't really stop a gunman wearing body armor wielding multiple assault rifles.

Beto confronts Abbott at his press conference, tells him "this is on you." Abbott has him escorted from the conference, the GOP Mayor of Uvalde yells that Beto is a "sick son of a bitch" and other GOPers are already in meltdown mode over Beto's lack of "civility" and "undignified" and "divisive" behavior. I don't care if it was a stunt, I applaud Beto for at least having the balls to do it. Maybe Abbott and his GOP legislature will pass a law forbidding people in the future from confronting their governor during press conferences.

Yes, we have a shit political system and shit governing requirements here. I completely fucking hate it, but, sorry, not changing.

And they don't have our form of government, so you are going to have to rewrite the constitution. How is that going to work?

And even if you have multiple parties that have to form two factions, you are still in pretty much the exact same place.

We have shit people who choose a shit political system. Genocidal religious zealots came to this land and colonized it. Enslavers started a country. The rest of us have been trying to claw it away from them. Polarization is a product of that fight. The dividing lines are becoming clearer. Multicultural democracy vs. Fascism. If there were multiple parties, they’d still coalesce around those two identifies except the multicultural democracy parties would be easier to pick off while they squabble with each other. It would be like the first season of Survivor.

Conservative:. If we had taken the money we've sent the Ukraine and spent it on school security, each school could have $400,000.

It’s wild how many times I’ve seen something along these lines posted on social media. Just so insanely short sighted.

Especially considering many schools have spent that much on LEO, metal detectors, and other security theater.
