Ongoing NC GOP debacle thread

New Bern fails to pass earlier alcohol sales on Sunday due to no second to the motion.

North Carolina Republican legislative leaders will hire the same mapmaker largely responsible for the racially gerrymandered maps that are court-ordered to be redrawn.

Rep. David Lewis (R-Harnett) broke the news that Tom Hofeller would be consulting for the GOP at the first joint legislative committee meeting Wednesday. Democrats, he added, will not have access to his work or services as the maps are created.

When asked why lawmakers went with the same person as before, Lewis said Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore wanted to hire the best person for the job.

“He’s certainly the guy that I have the most confidence in,” he added.

Winning!

Until NC Dems and rational republicans step up and vote.

Democracy North Carolina and the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law filed an amicus brief on August 3 with the North Carolina Supreme Court in Cooper v. Berger, challenging a new law — Senate Bill 68 — that blocks the Governor’s party from holding the majority of seats on state and county boards of elections. SB68 also blocks replacement of the Republican-appointed State Board of Elections’ executive director and says Republicans must chair all elections boards in presidential and gubernatorial election years.

WTH?

It's totally fair if I remember correctly. Republicans get even years. Democrats get odd years. They switch. No big deal, right?

The guy drew illegal maps in 2011. Let's hire him again and pay him twice as much!

The consultant hired to redraw state legislative districts for Republican House and Senate leaders will be paid $50,000 for his services, according to a contract released Tuesday.

Tom Hofeller, who has helped the GOP draw favorable district lines in multiple states, also drew North Carolina’s legislative maps in 2011.
