I am just looking at this from a financial point of view. I was just looking at some NBA Mock Drafts from CBS (26th), NBAdraftnet (22nd), Draftexpress (15th), Tankaton (14th), Landof10 (23rd), which have all been updated within the last 2-3 days and he is currently projected between 14th-26th. Basically, he is at best a late Lottery Pick or a mid/late 1st round pick. The reason I am bringing this up is because an NBA Player's salary is "basically" set for their first 4 seasons (I know only the first 2 years are guaranteed, and team options could occur in their 3rd and 4th season, but I want to keep the math "simple"). Personally, I believe that if Collins stays another season and works on his defense, then he has a very very good chance to be a Top 10 Pick if not higher, and would dramatically increase the amount of money he would make in his first 4 NBA Seasons. Below, I used the salaries for the 2017 NBA Draft class from
http://basketball.realgm.com/nba/info/rookie_scale/2017 to show financially what Collins would receive if he is picked were is currently projected, then I showed what some of the other slots would make in this years draft, and then compared them to what he could make if waited 1 more season to work on his game to become a possible Top 10 Pick. I only used the first years since they are the only ones that are guaranteed.
2017 Draft
Year 1 Year 2 Total
26th $1.21 $1.45 $2.66
23rd $1.37 $1.62 $2.99
20th $1.54 $1.83 $3.37
15th $1.97 $2.33 $4.30
14th $2.07 $2.46 $4.53
--------------------------
10th $2.54 $3.02 $5.56
8th $2.99 $3.46 $6.45
6th $3.48 $4.14 $7.62
2018 Draft
14th $2.37 $2.77 $5.14
12th $2.65 $3.07 $5.72
10th $2.98 $3.40 $6.38
8th $3.31 $3.90 $7.21
6th $3.98 $4.66 $8.64
4th $4.82 $5.67 $10.49
If Collins was picked in this year's NBA Draft as currently projected between 26th-14th, then his salary range for his first two seasons would be between $2.66 to $4.53. On the other hand, if he waited 1 more season and developed into a Top 10 pick, then he could be looking at $6.38 to $10.49. This is a difference of $3.72-$5.96 in just his first two seasons. The problem is that the current NBA Rookie Contract is "set" for 4 seasons, and if we could just agree to use the simplest form for his 3rd and 4th season, then those numbers would double to $7.44-$11.92.
