The Manning Buyout

the house came with very nice Frigidaire gallery appliances except the freezer doesn’t have an ice maker. I will remain poor until I have an ice maker.

Excerpts from an article on the buyout in the Winston Salem Journal:

Report: Manning paid $14.7 million from Wake Forest
  • John Dell journalnow.com 5/31/23
Officials at Wake Forest didn't have a lot to say about a published report indicating that Danny Manning, a former men's basketball coach, was paid $14.7 million in 2021.

According to USA Today, Manning received the payment in 2021. The specific dollar figure was provided on the school’s federal tax return, which was obtained by the newspaper.

Will Pantages, a senior associate athletics director for communications, provided a statement to the Journal about the report after a request for comment from John Currie, the athletics director who was hired in 2019 and who ultimately fired Manning the next year.

Pentages wrote in an email that Wake Forest would not be commenting any further on Manning, who is currently the associate head coach at Louisville.

“The compensation of Daniel R. Manning, former basketball coach, shown in Schedule J, Part II, Column Biii, reflects a payment that was included in his 2021 Form W-2 in full satisfaction of all obligations under his contract of employment as men’s head basketball coach of Wake Forest University,” Pentages said. “As a matter of university personnel policy, we will not share further details.”...

...According to the USA Today article, the buyout is one of the biggest since the newspaper started tracking coaching buyouts in 2017. Archie Miller was fired by Indiana after the 2020-21 season and was scheduled to receive about a $10.3 million buyout.

Because Wake Forest is a private school, it also likely had to pay at least $2.6 million more in federal excise tax due to a 21% levy that applies to the pay of non-profit organizations’ most highly compensated employees, according to USA Today...
This is so gross. Way to go Wellman!

If you are critical of Wake Forest paying Manning $14.7 million to disappear, I have a question for you. Would you prefer to have the money and Manning as coach?

I'd prefer to have the money back, Manning gone and Wellman to have not given him such a ridiculous contract extension for winning 19 games.

6 freaking years. Guaranteed. For Danny F Manning. I couldn’t believe it when I read about it the fall before the next season started. We promptly lost to Houston Baptist and DFM said “I have my contract. I’m not worried.” That’s the type of contract that Grobe and Clawson earned. But Danny F Manning? He had won nothing. Worst contract ever. Anywhere.

I wonder what kind of refrigerator Manning bought with that $14.7 million severance check
He bought Ron Well-Man & Nathan O Hatch what ever kind of Frigidaire they wanted since both of them approved his contract extension!

People aren't critical that we paid him. We are critical that a condescending fuckstick of an AD guaranteed money to a coach nobody else wanted.
Let me add a little to that: huge extension based on making AND losing the play-in game. Like tens of possible suitors were going to be bidding for his services on that accomplishment.

Meanwhile firing a 3rd year coach who went 61-31 who actually had just won a first round game.

There were people here obsessed with the idea Bill Self would bolt and Manning would go back to Kansas.

Wake fans in general are obsessed with other teams stealing our coaches even though it’s rarely happened.

Yes, of course, anyone is fooling themselves to think otherwise, we have had 3 more losing seasons of missing the NCAA tournament. The 14.7 million is money we could use to actually improve our situation.

I'd prefer the above and add that Wellman be stripped naked, painted with peanut butter, and handcuffed to a tree in the middle of the woods.

There were?

I tried to remain optimistic about Manning for longer than most (my bad), but I don't remember that being a thing.

There may have been one or two people who were worried about it. But it wasn't really a thing. Not like Prosser to Pitt or Grobe to Arkansas

Of course it wasn't the same as Prosser to Pitt or Grobe to Arkansas. Those were actual job offers. But there were plenty of folks who worried about Manning leaving.

Wellman had no business giving the extension he did. But to be clear, Wake had just made the first 4, brought in Chaundee Brown and Olivier Sarr, and signed Jaylen Hoard. Up until the tip off of the Georgia Southern game, this board (reasonably for the time) thought Manning had Wake on the upswing.

part of living the sweet life we all had involves posting dumbassed shit on a message board at 3am

Define Worried.

Posted about him being poached by Kansas if Self left. Its no different than how every year people post about whether Clawson is going to take another job. Well, other than the fact that Clawson is good coach who has options.

I think it's more akin to people being worried about Forbes being poached by Iowa. Longtime coach there currently (Self/McCaffrey) and a school that Manning/Forbes were strongly associated with in their past. Clawson doesn't really have an equivalent job that could come open, we just assume he'd want to move up a level.

I went back and did a number of searches and read a lot of the Manning credibility thread (ugh)... The only talk of Manning leaving Wake for Kansas happened VERY early on in his tenure (like 2014 or 2015).

It was used as a joke by 2016. And even when we made the NCAA Tourney in 2017 and people thought we might be improving, I couldn't find a post where someone was concerned that Manning might actually leave.

We can search these things, people. It's not difficult.
