there's a point where a team that is in a good market and has plenty of assets can make a run. cano will be a bad contract in 5-7 years, but in the meantime he's a perenniel 5-7 win player. you have to pay to get that level of talent. adding him and price while they have felix in his prime is better than sitting and hoping the prospects turn out while they continue to finish 11th in the league in attendance. i'd be willing to bet they finish in the top 5 in the al in attendance next year and win 80+ games as is. if they continue to add to what they have (and they can afford to do it) then they could be at the 85+ point that makes you a playoff contender. that's how teams should operate when they aren't on a shoe-string budget: collect assets, grow a star or 2, get to mediocre with out any bad contracts, and then push the chips to the center. if you stand on the sidelines forver there's a good chance you win 70-75 games year, miss your best players prime years, and lose your job.
