the official new supreme court thread - Very political

i mean, control over your guns is in the Constitution. control over your own body is not.

welcome to the United States

You'd think control over your own body is a God-given right the government can't infringe upon, but whatevs.

Very very cool that our entire national political framework in 2022 (population 332 million) is limited to a 4500 word document written 250 years ago by 55 slave owners for a nation of 4 million people where only land owning white men could vote.

Los Angeles has roughly the same population as Pre-Revolution America.

Or at least, what 5 (dark money funded) justices want and argue fits within that document.

Even a true “originalist” interpretation wouldn’t reach the decision these supposed legal scholars have reached. The Heller decision was reached by a (likely intentional) misconception of the 2nd Amendment. This current group isn’t even trying to pretend like it’s decisions are anything but their wishes and desires. Alito may as well be auditioning for Fox

That's the thing about Heller. The Second Amendment literally begins with "A well regulated Militia, being necessary . . ." And yet that part is just entirely read out of the text. Regulation is the third freaking word in the amendment.

And for those who think this Court won't move beyond Roe to go after other landmark rulings extending privacy, equality, and minority rights, Clarence Thomas seems to have other ideas.

so for a total non legal mind, explain to me how this works. SCOTUS looks at past decisions and is like, you know what, they were wrong when they decided this. so they get a case related to a previous ruling then overturn it?

Maybe they’ll reconsider interracial marriage too!

same sex relationships?!

republicans are the worst

Curious how Clarence thomas would vote to overturn Loving vs. Virginia, probably would vote to overturn it yet still somehow stay married.

Clarence Thomas reminds of that high school history teacher who has been at the same school forever where he can't be fired, still smokes in the teachers lounge even though he's been told to stop, bitches about the suggested donation of 25 cents for a cup of coffee, and has that strained look of a constipated person hoping for a bowel movement.

Some people will tell you they have a professional/moral code which would never allow them to do such things, but yeah - it appears that's exactly what they're openly saying they'll do.

Conservatives don’t need his vote anyway.

Thomas and Alito have had Obergefell, Griswold and Lawrence in their sights since Barrett was appointed.

Sure, they might overturn Obergefell and Lawrence, but did you hear there was a trans athlete in Madagascar who won a judo competition?
