the official new supreme court thread - Very political

But of course, they shrug when Republicans are arrested for child porn or trafficking.

It's important Matt Gaetz stays in Congress so people like Brown Jackson can't release him into public!

Yes, we drank beer. My friends and I. Boys and girls. Yes, we drank beer. I liked beer. Still like beer. We drank beer.

When Cruz was bringing up the books taught at Georgetown Day, was he trying to say that the US Federal government should have a say in the curriculum taught in independent schools? I can't wait for the Cato Institute and Federalist society to see those statements.

We are just really a collection of good countries with a bunch of shitty countries that take our money and don’t want to be told what to with anything else.

Here's the video of that btw in case people think he was taken out of context. Really scary stuff.

Fits perfectly with the current Trumpite GOP base. Their whole being is about dragging the entire country back to 1955. That's what gets them out of bed in the morning, not this states rights, balanced budget, small government stuff that most of them don't really care about anyway.

Yep. And rest assured when rank and file Republicans talk about the “activist court,” they’re not just talking about Roe, they’re talking about Brown and Loving as well.

man jh and angus must be really embarrassed by their party. jh is a fucking lawyer.

nah scratch that I forgot who I was talking about

should asked him the next question down the rabbit hole.... "should slavery been left up to states to decide?

I joke about the coming republican pivot but it really is a 360° pivot right back to the 40's and 50's.

As we are seeing with state abortion laws and fugitive slave laws back then, the goal is for states to get enough power to force all the states to do their bidding. And they can use how Republicans are distributed in states and gerrymandering to force their laws at the federal level with a Supreme Court to defend them.

And a bunch of other landmark progressive Supreme Court rulings as well. Conservatives used to complain about the Earl Warren Court's rulings, now they're close to being able to overturn many of them. And they'll defend it by saying that they're just returning the power to the states. I believe that one of the conservative posters here has already argued that things like gay marriage rights should have been decided on a state-by-state basis and not by the Supreme Court. As I posted earlier, let's all party like it's 1955!

Imagine actually thinking people in this country should have different civil rights based on where they live

Well, he must have been lit up on social media, as he's already backtracked on his statement. Sure he "misunderstood", sure.

"Early Tuesday evening, Braun issued a statement saying he “misunderstood” the line of questioning about interracial marriage.

"Earlier during a virtual press conference I misunderstood a line of questioning that ended up being about interracial marriage, and let me be clear on that issue — there is no question the Constitution prohibits discrimination of any kind based on race. That is not something that is even up for debate, and I condemn racism in any form, at all levels and by any states, entities, or individuals,” Braun said.

And there was also this:

"A Gallup tracking poll last taken in 2013 found that 87 percent of American adults approved of marriage between Blacks and whites, but only about 20 percent approved at the time the Supreme Court ruled in 1967.

A Yahoo News/YouGov poll released in December found that just 24 percent of Americans wanted Roe v. Wade to be overturned, but many expect the court to strike down the protections after it heard oral arguments late last year on a Mississippi abortion ban law."

Well this country was founded on some people having no rights regardless of where they lived. Conservatives are just trying to claw back to that.

Using basic math, if 13% of the US disapproves of interracial marriage, that’s a sizable portion of people who lean Republican.

Yeah that’s about 32 million people, or the entire population of Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Louisiana. Another words a shit ton of people.
