Video Game Thread - $70 Zelda Expansion!

Anyone use the playmira app to stream PS4 games to their iphones/ipads? Do you know if the PS4 needs to be connected to the internet via LAN for it to work, or can it be connected to wifi?

Like all other game streaming, it probably depends how good your wifi is.

I don't know if I'd recommend the GOTY version or not. IMO the only DLC really worth getting so far is the Supersonic Fury pack, because the Dominus is the best car evar (FIGHT ME BROS), and the Takumi is the best looking one if you care about that sorta thing. I guess if you know you're going to like the game (and you will), then, sure, it makes sense from a cost perspective since the GOTY edition is a lower price than the regular edition + that one DLC pack.

So I guess I'd recommend the GOTY version.

What's the difference between GOTY edition and the collector's edition? Both seem to have the 3 DLC and a few bonus cars.

I guess it's moot for me anyways since I'll be playing on an Xbox which didn't get the GOTY edition.

Should I play Uncharted 4 or Last of Us first?

I never played Uncharted 4, but Last of Us is great. I was worried that it was going to be one long escort mission, but I never once thought the little girl was slowing me down. In fact, after about 20 mins of playing, I felt like it was my honor to be protecting her. The complete opposite of say, Resident Evil 4, where if letting the girl die meant I could keep going, I would have tossed her to the zombies.

I went to the grand finals of the Dota 2 Boston Major this weekend, which was so much more fun than I expected. The big storyline was this Greek team, Ad Finem, that came out of nowhere... They had only won like $7k total leading into this tournament, but played their way into the finals. They were having a blast, too, tons of emotion after their wins. Ended up losing to OG in the finals and going home with $500k.

Most of the games I saw were kinda meh, over by ~25 minutes. The exception to that was Game 3 of the OG/Ad Finem series. AF was down 0-2 (it was a Bo5), and they went down by about 20,000 in net worth (which, you know, is a lot). They won two incredible teamfights, got the net worth lead to 10,000+ for themselves, and then lost it again, and then got it back again. It was the best game of Dota I've ever seen. (#esports!)

Here's the full game if anybody wants to watch the whole thing. (It was a 79 minute game)

And here's a more manageable clip, of the very end, with one of the ballsiest plays I think I've ever seen. (And that call! Good god that call.)

You younger folks will encounter moments in your life that cause you to question "Am I really this out of the loop these days?" That a video game tournament was held at the Wang Theater for an entire week and seemed to get good attendance, based on looking at that video, is one of those moments for me.

RSF how was the actual attendance? I'm not finding any info to answer that via Googling.

Saturday (the day I was there for the grand finals) was sold out.

I think Friday was too, but I could be wrong. The games started at 10a each day, so I'd imagine that weekday attendance was worse.

Seating was general admission, though, so it's not like they were having to sell tickets at different pricing tiers or whatever. I was actually front row off to the right (I think I'm juuuust in the shot at the end of that clip there). The energy was great, though. The entire (American, obviously) crowd was behind the Greeks by the end. Those guys were so much fun to watch.

you don't want to be in the e-sports loop.

That ending reminds me of xPeke's backdoor at IEM Katowice 2013.

seems like an exciting moment

"Esports" or broadcast companies need to figure out how to explain this shit to the Casuals and non-gamers. They should start by ending the row of blank faced dudes staring at screens and stop calling gamers by their tags.

On your first point - how would you change that? They have to play the game, and (at this point) that requires looking at a computer screen.

On your second point - handles are a part of the gamer culture -they're not going away anytime soon. Why do you think monikers are a barrier to mainstream acceptance? The NBA has Black Mamba, The Mailman, The Truth, etc.

1. I just mean not show the players while the game is happening. It's just weird and makes everyone look like a donk sitting in mom's basement.

2. It might be a part of the culture but it's huge barrier for people not in the culture. We don't refer to Kobe as "the black mamba" for all his endorsements, interviews, merchandise, etc. it's just a nickname, like in every sport. It's not like every time Arnold Palmer walked up to the first tee they announced "now on the tee. From Latrobe, PA: The King"

I watch a fair amount of Hearthstone streaming on Twitch. It's pretty interesting to see how experts in their field play the same game we do but so much better.

I'm guessing ESports is going to blow up even more than it already has from a commercial standpoint.

1. I think it's stranger to remove the human element and not show the players at all.

2. So essentially you're saying that you can't identify with a competitor unless you know his birth name? Interesting. I've always been fine with referring to well-known gamers by their handles like xPeke, Bjergsen and Faker. However, when I play with RSF, I call him by his real name, I don't call him RSF. I guess what I'm getting at is I don't have a problem with handles if I don't know the person. I'd wager that's a pretty typical viewpoint in gamer culture though. I see how it's not that common in physical sports. Weird divide.

Do you play any MOBAs? The divide there between pro and amateur is insane.

guy who plays lots of videogames and follows esports confused why people can't get into esports and tells them to try harder

I call RSF by his boards name when I play w/ him.

Also Rocket League is the best e-sports game that exists, period. Eff those super long Dota matches.

Any best in the world Rocket League matches you can link here? I played last night with a friend of a friend that has Challenger status or whatever and I'm not sure the ball touched the ground twenty times in five minutes (3v3). I might as well have been playing pickup with the Wizards.
