Wake @ Duke - 3:30 PM ESPN2/ACCN

Clawson post press conference clearly stating defense has been the achilles heel all season. The close losses this year on the coach.

I think the WRs did improve significantly. Let's not forget where Greene and Banks were a year ago. But QB and OL got worse and RB and TE was pretty much the same.

I just mean that they never really progressed as the season continued. Banks was good, sure, but Donovan and AT were way too inconsistent when it mattered the most. Some of that is on Sam and the O-Line, but not all of it. Key inexplicably being underutilized is probably on Clawson. Morin just kinda is who he is?

TBH, I don't think anyone (staff included) realized just how much Zach Tom would be missed.

His play really masked OL issues which weren't easily papered over this season.

But teeth gnashing over the offense this season is like pointing to a scrape on your elbow when your right leg has been sawed off just below the knee. Clawson clearly frustrated with the pass defense in the post game presser.

Defense is absolutely a problem but this team had a NUMBER of problems and coaching is not immune to the discussion. There were some bone-headed decisions by a guy in his 9th year.

As bad as the defense was you had the ball in Clemson territory with a chance to drive for a game-winning field goal could never get in field goal range. You had two possessions against North Carolina one inside the 10 and another driving for a game-winning field goal couldn't get the field goal attempt either time. This game all you needed was the first down. and Louisville was a complete offensive breakdown so to act like our seven and five record was all on the defense it's just not accurate and holding what should be an elite offense completely unaccountable.

Also had the ball w chance to win vs State and Dook and pooped the bed. Remarkably unclutch this year in every close game we had.

At Wake Forest, I'll absolutely never understand why we go conservative. We DO NOT have Alabama's defense to back up these decisions and never will.

Many of you are too young to remember John Mackovic and the 1979 season. But the one thing that he did that really has never been done since at Wake Forest was he threw total caution to the wind (ala Mike Leach) and it paid off in spades. Was some of it luck? Hell yes. But he gave his team the chance to let luck happen!! Some of our decisions are made as if Dick Butkus and Lawrence Taylor will be on the field. We have skinny, slow kids chasing people down. TAKE SOME FUCKING CHANCES!!!!

Who is holding the offense completely unaccountable, Chris? That's a strawman.

In your opinion how would you grade the offense relative to expectations?

And how would you grade the defense?

col anus crying foul over strawman arguments sure is something

today's got a bit of everything doesn't it

Never had the ball with a chance to win vs. State as once Wake scored to cut the lead to 6 the vaunted defense allowed true freshman MJ Morris in his first college start to look like Vince Young in his prime and drive right down the field.

Sure, he mentioned he's as tired as he's ever been at the end of a season as well and I'm sure the team is given their performances since the meltdown during the Louisville game.

Without going back and looking at Richmond, Bowling Green, etc. seasons under Clawson, has he ever had a high scoring offense and good defense at the same time?

It's absolutely on him. We fired our DC and some defensive staff last year, but ended up with a worse record.
It’s obviously a talent problem on defense, we’ve got to recruit better on that side of the ball. I think Lambert is probably a pretty good DC, but we’ve got to get better horses on that side of the ball.
