Wake Forest Basketball - '23-24 Schedule Thread

I tend to think we were on the outside looking in before the Monsanto injury. Probably needed to beat Miami the game before he got hurt. But that 4 game stretch a few weeks earlier when we lost to UVA, Pitt, NCSU, & Duke was a disappointing run of missed opportunities.

And in fact, we were down 52-46 at halftime of the NC State game (when Monsanto got hurt just before the buzzer) and had a <15% win probability.

The biggest issue is that we weren't a very good team. That tends to hurt your chances of an NCAA bid. Having Monsanto, Carr, and Williamson healthy all year perhaps makes us better... But we were still flawed (especially on defense).

The classic Wake Forest way. Got the ball down 4 and our best shooter about to pull up a 3 either to be down 1 or 4 at half. Instead he crumbles to ground they run out for a dunk to make it an impossible 6 point deficit and both DM and WF’s season over.

Very hopeful that this coming season we see a breakout from Andrew Carr, which he was arguably in the midst of having (75% eFG%, 20.3 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 4 total ast, 5 stl, 5 blocks, 2 turnovers) in the 3 ACC games before he hurt his wrist.

it's all about the Q1 wins, or lack thereof

And we should be prepared for news about how one of our players was eaten by a capybara or got poisoned by licking envelopes or something. This is Wake we're talking about.

When the season ended, Utah (#75) would've been a slight favorite over WF (#86). The Utes lost a key starter to UCLA, but also gained quite a few transfers, including Deivon Smith from GT, who was GT's leading scorer against WF last year (15 points), and then never played again last season. Utah should finish in the top half of the Pac 12 next season. Utah's Craig Smith is a great coach.

FWIW, Utah's Center Branden Carlson is back for a 5th year. He served a two-year mission, before Utah. So, Carlson graduated from HS in 2017. He will be 25 next year. Carlson posted 16 ppg; 8 rpg. He is a 7-0 and one of the best big men in the country; 1st team all Pac-12 last season. Would be good to have Reid for that matchup. Utah/WF will be a key game for WF's NCAAT resume. Also, a win means WF plays Houston who is almost certain to be a top 5 team next year. A loss and WF plays Towson in the loser's bracket which would not be helpful.

Utah by far the biggest OOC game this year. Gotta win that or we’ll be forced to go like 17-3 to make the tourney.

Too many variables to calculate

Friday game will have to be at 4:30pm or later given other games are scheduled for 11:30am & 2pm. I'd assume 6:30pm & 9pm again... But maybe not.

We were rolling when UVA came to town. Top 10 team, weekend. The Joel was pretty full and ready to explode. Kept it semi respectable but pretty much laid an egg. That unfortunately followed us for a while as we lost two close away games, but the absolute meltdown to NC State in there too was a killer. Team was never the same.
I remember sitting there near halftime when we fiddle farted with the basketball, missed some lame shot and State quickly came down & hit a dagger 3 to grab the momentum. It didn’t cook us all the way but you could feel the air leaving the balloon.
