Wellman tips his hand in Washington Post

Losing Skip will hurt us for a long time. He was the perfect fit for us and he could handle the kids and keep them in check.

He could? I loved Skip but let's not rewrite history. Why did he lose some of the players he lost?

Well then that is good news. Since that is about Gaudio that is still what was said about Les Robinson so maybe we only have 15 more years of crap to go!

That's on Wellman. He's the one who promoted Dino. He should accept the risks of blindly making the assistant into the head guy. There's nothing that says players have to respect an assistant as the head coach, especially in a situation like that.

Everything that comes out about Dino/Bz, even info that seems to be in Wellman's defense, makes it seem like the man has terrible foresight.

Wellman's decisions since Skip's death are why we are where we are. Wellman basically taught the world that coaching hires should never be made on the basis of incoming recruits. Mistake #1 was signing Dino to a multi-year contract. That decision was 100% Wellman's. Mistake #2 was extending Dino's contract months before firing him. If Wellman handle's either of those situations better we are not in this mess.

Regarding #2, Wellman should have simply told Dino his contract would not be renewed, and then held a presser explaining differences in philosophies, and promoted an assistant to interim head coach (see mistake #1). Instead, we were left with a huge buyout and unable to afford a good coach.

This is pretty much where I am, with the one exception that I think you have to promote.Dino after Skips death, albeit for the very short term. The extension after Cleveland State and the hiring of Bz were dreadful.
