Official 2012-2013 MLB Hot Stove Thread

This was monumentally stupid by DiPoto. There's no way around it.

No. Monumentally stupid was trading for that Vernon Wells contract. This is just mildly non-ideal.

Money is not as big problem as alienating a potentially once in a generation talent. When you have deep pockets money is far less important.

Wasn't there a story about the Angels drafting Trout with the second of their two consecutive draft picks instead of the first? I thought it had something to do with sending a message about his bonus demands, but I can't find details. (Although according to this, he was asking for $2.5MM. And according to this, he signed at $1.2MM pretty quickly. Maybe his agent is a bit aggressive.)

We are talking about tenths of pennies. You don't take chances when the amounts you are talking about are totally inconsequential.

I can't believe the lengths you are going to defend or justify this stupidity. Sometimes people make stupid mistakes. DiPoto did on this one.

RJ, stop talking in absolutes. We do not know what is going on behind the scenes.

Trout is receiving the amount of money that he deserves according to what everyone agreed to in the CBA.

Yes, on strategy may be to toss him some money to make him happy, but there's other options as well. DiPoto could very well be attempting to sign Trout to a Longoria-like deal, using the small salary Trout currently has as leverage. If he was to toss him another million dollars now, that kills a great deal of leverage the organization clearly has.

I'm not saying you're 100% wrong RJ, just that there could be other factors at hand you are not considering.

Considering the agent is pissed and the GM is trying to defend himself, it would be totally illogical not to believe this was a screw up.

Your logic here makes no sense.

Let's replace agent with Republicans and GM with Obama.

Considering the Republicans are pissed and Obama is trying to defend himself, it would be totally illogical not to believe this was a screw up.

The agent is of course pissed because they didn't get much money, and the agent especially gets nothing from that since it's basically league minimum. The GM is merely defending his action, far from a sign of a screw up.

If they decided to give Trout an extra million dollars, every other GM would be on the phone yelling at him. Everyone agreed in the CBA on salary in your early years being based off service time. No reason to now decide this one player should break everything else and now be paid due to ability rather than service time. Where's the bright line? Should Harper also get more? Heyward? Very easily the system becomes ruined.

First of all, you should what I said not that I said it.

The amount I suggested above the minimum would not have ruined anything. Actually it could have helped. Had they given him 50% more, they would have staked out a line in the sand. "To get this much you have to a year like Trout did."

Since arguably only Ted Williams ever had a rookie like Trout's that's a pretty good defense mechanism for the future.

The agent and the player are clearly pissed off that they weren't even called about what was going to happen. They were left out in the dark.

Hell, if he called they may have been happy with $50-100,000 over minimum.

It was a major screw up by the GM. They will likely have to overpay the next time.

And as for the rest...

Still a completely arbitrary line they are creating. When it has already been determined that performance should not come into play in determining salary for your second year of service, why should the Angels then go ahead and break the rules they already agreed to?

The agent and player are merely bitching. These weren't negotiations or anything. Trout had no reason to believe he'd be receiving anything more than league minimum, the same thing all other 2nd year players without an extended contract receive.

And it is quite naive to think that an extra 50-100k right now would lead to a discount of any kind in the future. When he is a FA, he will receive fair market value. The additional leverage the GM may have in turning this into a long-term contract rather than just tossing over some more money now is worth the play.

You're in over your head, RJ. I have spent way too much time in the past 5 years studying and dealing with MLB contracts.

Not to distract from Trout talk, but I thought this was a pretty interesting article on Chris Archer:

Rays' Archer on mission for self-discovery

Archer borrows from the rapper Tupac in saying he wants to spark the mind that changes the world, referring often to the platform sports provides him. He aims high, hoping one day to reach "hundreds of thousands," figuring his background allows him to connect broadly — to kids who are black, white or both; from one-parent homes; adopted, etc.

"I just feel like I can help so many people," he said.

Archer speaks to youth groups stressing that it's cool to be smart, posts inspirational messages on his @ChrisArcher42 (not coincidentally, Jackie Robinson's number) Twitter account, buys holiday gifts for needy families, helps out at the Boys & Girls clubs. And he's eager to do more, with plans to start a foundation and no ending point in sight.

"Life is not about having a 2.70 ERA and winning 20 games a year," Archer said. "That's awesome, but what life is about is using that to impact others positively."

I think I'm a Chris Archer fan now.

Considering the agent is pissed and the GM is trying to defend himself, it would be totally illogical not to believe this was a screw up.

Just because the agent acts "pissed" to reporters does not mean that he is actually pissed. Everything is a negotiating tactic.

The GM is only defending himself because reporters are asking him about it. What's he going to say, "yeah, we screwed up"?

The reality is the GM did screw up and he knows it.

The contract is in. There is no negotiation. You are wrong to say there will be any. Being "renewed" means this.

Ignore all counterpoints and just make the absolute statement that "the GM did screw up and he knows it." Have no analysis or reasoning to back it up. Never admit being wrong.
