Why Some of Y'all Talk Funny

There is a lot of vowel distinction in that area. When I moved to NJ from OK I didn't differentiate between "pen" and "pin" and people noticed/commented on it a lot.

Pan? Weird. There is no difference between Pen and Pin for me.

I say pin and pen as the same.

Yeah, definitely glad they used "been" as an example.

How about Lynn and Len? Like bojangle said with hen and win, I pronounce them the same but understand the difference between the two. FWIW, I grew up in Eastern NC.

Here's my best shot:

Mary - hairy, fairy, scary, actuary
Merry - berry, furry, slurry, worry
Marry - Larry, Harry, nary, carry

Does that help?

Another weird Southeastern PA/NJ thing I noticed through the years: people pronouncing "Tuesday" as "Toos-dee", etc.

Water:

wit-er (Pennsylvania)

Waa-tur: everywhere else.

No. First line and last line are all pronounced the same. and no way does 'merry' rhyme with 'slurry' (which rhymes with Murray).

the merry differences are a nasal thing. You really just need to think of how a jappy sorority chick talks. But maybe you don't have those.

tues-dee is a baltimore thing too

i don't think the south really has japs like b-more/the NE does.

*for those who don't know, JAP is jewish-american princess (at least that's the acronym I know)

Words here that rhyme to me: Mary, hairy, fairy, scary, actuary, marry, Larry, Harry, nary, carry, berry

Words that rhyme with each other but not the other ones: furry, slurry, worry

Nobody says "merry" so it is pronounced as "murray" do they?

I learned the term JAP and NJB recently. I had no idea this was a thing.

I don't know NJB; the only reason i know JAP is because a friend of mine is a self-proclaimed JAP

i hear people from time to time say across but add a T to the end of it. never heard of acrosst before

Holy shit, how hard is it to pronounce merry? It rhymes with very or Reyshaun Terry, hence why they have the same vowels.

sometimes I jokingly say "murray Christmas" because it sounds like Santa in my head. but yeah merry and slurry don't really sound the same in my normal speech.
