Wake - USC Game Thread

This team is solid. But they lack true star power. If our coach isn't a complete jack ass with this group they can make the NCAA's. But without a real star or two we won't get all that far. But they were fun to watch again today.

We're good enough to where Bzz will get a massive extension from Wellman for "righting the ship." Get ready.

Uh....... no they can not. They would prob have to win 23 for that to be an option. Good win over worst team in PAC-12, but not much should change in anyone's expectations.

Good lord, the '76-'77 team had a PG who ended his career as a two time 1st team ACC selection and another who had a ten year NBA career as a PG.

Maybe focus on the 'I can remember'. You can probably figure out I might have no knowledge of anything pre-79.

I always thought of Downey as more of a 2G with his scoring. CMM plays both and Madison is a pure PG. If we lump 2G in the mix, Coron makes three good ball handlers in our backcourt. Ish and Teague, really, apparently they couldn't play on the court at the same time with out one of them getting pissed and pouting. Justin was the furthest thing from a PG that we could have.

CMM/Madison/Coron have 66 assists and 22 TO's, that's pretty good PG play, IMO.

Except Downey started at point guard for two full seasons before Chris Paul arrived. (And a couple games into CP3's freshman year, IIRC.) Was the starting point on the regular season ACC champs in '02-'03.

I like Madison. Madison has a LOOOOONG way to go to reach Downey.

Other than that glaring mistake and the other bemusing caveats, perfect hypothesis!

if the schedule wasn't so horrendous and we had a decent coach then this team would have a shot. In order to get on the bubble this team would likely have to win out the non-conference schedule (including tomorrow's game) and then finish at least .500 in the ACC.

We play UNC, Duke, and Syracuse at home (should be penciled in as losses) but get State, VT, and Miami on the road (nowhere near ready to pencil those in as wins). Even if we picked up those three on the road (hardly a given) and won the rest of our home games (even less of a given) we would be 21-10 with our marquee wins being other bubble teams.

So to make the tournament we will likely have to do all of that plus pull off a major upset and/or make some noise in the ACC tournament (not sure of the format but that likely means be playing on saturday).

Excuse me if I'm skeptical.

Actually Carl is one of my favorite coaches and I did a lot of his practices back in the day, but he actually did not do well in the ACCT. He over practiced our guys that week and had them worn out. But he did have remarkable success given the lack of facilities playing in that old Quanset Hut we were in. Skip Brown never won an ACC tourney game his entire 4 years under Carl. But we got to the Elite 8 in 1977 with Skip, Rod, Freshman Frank, Leapin Leroy & Jerry. Then the next year reached his only ACCT finals where we lost to Duke in the nationally televised finals on ABC. He regrouped them again in 1984 for another Elite 8 run with Delaney, Danny, Kenny Green, Teachey & a freshman named Muggsy.

True that Carl never had 'great' success in the ACCT, but at the same time he usually had us in a position to win, which would be a step up for the current and last coach.

13 seasons

Lost 7 games by 2 pts or less
Lost 2 games by 8
Lost 4 games by 14 or less (one in OT)

Three losses in OT.

Not saying that is an outstanding record, but we were usually right in the games. Can't say that for the last 6 years or so.

This is a good breakdown. If this team has any real promise, Wellman and Bz have hamstrung them with such a weak schedule.

In the first 8 games after Ish was fully integrated back in the lineup (around the ECU game, or as you called it the time they couldn't play together) in 08-09, Ish and Teague combined for 223pts, 56 ast's, 37 turnovers. They also went 7-1 and beat 3 top 10 teams. Let me know when these guys do that.

As to the bold, you thinking it doesn't make it so.

Well a 1.5 asst/to ratio is ok but not outstanding.

I guess that's why I said 'I' thought as opposed to an absolute statement like 'they were'.

56 asst/37 TO's is that really good PG play? Certainly not great.

Per 40 minute numbers

PG A: 20 points, 5 ast, 3 TO

PG B: 17 points, 6 ast, 2 TO

Who are you taking?

What if I told you one of those point guards averaged that against a bottom 25 schedule while the other one averaged that against a schedule that included 3 top 10 teams?

I'm actually gonna watch the game tomorrow, first wake bball
Of the year. I'm sure they will disappoint

I cannot believe anyone is truly trying to say that CMM + Madison jones is better than Teague + ish or would even utter that they were better than CP3 + Downey.

That would be retarded.

But CMM has something to him. Kinda like JG did his freshman year. Hopefully, he finishes better than JG, although hopefully that is after dickface is fired.
