Almost punched a guy last night

Again, same challenge. Calling strangers derogatory names is not a way to make friends. I think Fatt's reaction is pretty normal. He got pissed off, ultimately he made the right decision and walked away.

Wait, so your solution to a suggestion that someone not fly off the handle at being called a name is for me to stand around and call people names? Logic, it fails you.

Everyone calm down. It's Derby Day tomorrow.

Need to hear reactions from EatLeadCommie, Knight, and MACDeac before we move on here.

Yes its a fairly common game in this area where they go through the parking lot at the grocery store with their story of car broken down, or whatever needing money.

Yeah and it really sucks for people with actual car problems. A few years ago, it took me half an hour for someone to jump my car and I even had the cables.

Grab a jump box and keep it charged and in the trunk. They usually have air compressors and power outlets on them too, so they are handy for other things.

How long will they hold a charge? I do have AAA, but figured it wouldn't take long to get a jump.

If you can't convey "don't Fuck with me" with the tone of your voice then you aren't enough of a bad ass to think about hitting a complete stranger.

I'm suggesting that if you don't understand why he got pissed, you should participate in a social experiment that might enlighten.

Last fall I was pretty nervous when I was approached by a pair of women in the parking lot behind my church, who needed a jump. I probably would have even declined women if it wasn't in a church lot, and might have even declined a man in the church lot if he looked sketchy.

They were 40-something women who definitely looked like mothers and neither of them had jumper cables. I was astonished that they didn't deem that an important thing to keep in their cars. I keep a set, just seems like a good idea.

Alpha vs. Beta males on this thread, interesting stuff.

Last guy who asked me for money I gave $30 to.

But if I'd thought of initiating a confrontation and killing him, I probably would have, so I think we're more or less on the same page.

Months at a time. I usually end up using mine to help someone else once every few months anyway, so I've never let it sit long enough to find out.

I've been toying for the idea of begging with a sign that says "Need money for private island. Anything helps. God bless" and getting a Square for my Iphone just to see how much I could get.

There was a guy on the corner of Peters Creek/Silas Creek yesterday around 730 who had a sign that said something like "need money for WEED", didn't catch exactly what it said but it made me laugh.

And yeah, I usually just say I don't have any cash. But a few months ago I did have one guy come up to me at a gas station in Mebane with an "I'm a student, my grandma is sick my buddy and I are going to see her, I left my wallet at home in a hurry and now I need money for gas" story. I ended up putting $5 of gas in his car on my credit card rather than breaking the $10 in my wallet. Not sure about the whole grandma thing, but if I was out of town and out of gas without my wallet, I'd probably appreciate some gas too regardless of where I was going.

LOL. Getting pissed and seriously considering punching someone over being called a name are not the same thing. I get pissed all of the time. I never consider physically assaulting them unless I actually feel threatened.

In this case, pity was probably the more appropriate response than pissed.

I think you're confusing alpha and insecure.

The two are not mutually exclusive at all. Clearly.

ETA: Closer to inextricable in my experience.

Thread is kind of a case study in that, from the OP to the man asking for money, to some other posters responding.

Most social workers I have talked to have always advised me to never give these people money - it will go for drugs or alcohol. I had one guy give me a few copies of his card with directions to a shelter and said to hand that out instead so they can seek help.

If these people are not homeless and desperate and are just running a scam to get money then they perhaps deserve to be punched - though I would not advise anyone doing so.

The saddest thing I heard was a kind-hearted friend of mine who saw a guy by the road with one of the "homeless, hungry, please help" signs. So she went to a grocery store and bought a bag of stuff and took it to him. As she gave it to him he started picking things out and complaining about this or that item that he didn't like or couldn't eat or whatever. Last time she did that.
