F is for Fascism (Ferguson MO)

Does it matter? Is there any job interview where some of these do not come into play?

There are certain jobs where they don't come into play.

In his case, and I have no idea how many times this happened to him, he very well may not have had a preconceived bias that he was aware of.

If he got burned three straight times then (I am guessing without knowing the stats on time period that mothers come back/if they come back) i't's statistically unlucky for him that it occurred.

He is just placing all the weight on anecdotal evidence versus what stats after smoothing would tell us.

Who the fuck makes small business decisions off of stats smoothing? If that is how it should be done, why don't we have computers making all business decisions? This is completely idiotic. So actual business experience should be irrelevant, as all decisions can be made on nationwide stats. Got it.

And how did I have a preconceived bias if I hired them in the first place? I didn't tell them not to come back, they made that decision on their own.

I didn't make my post to be antagonizing, nor to indicate that there is a right or wrong way to run a small business (as I have no small business owner experience). Where in my post did I state that "actual business experience should be irrelevant?" You're attacking an argument that I wasn't making.

I will say, if you are basing your decisions primarily off of anecdotes and not relying on stats that show you more information than your limited sample size (on really any business decision), then you are likely not maximizing profits.

If you are an employer, then the goal is to hire the best person capable of doing the job. If somebody is less intelligent than somebody else, then you want to hire the more intelligent person. That's pretty clear cut. Somebody who is less intelligent than somebody else is almost certainly going to do a lesser job than somebody who is more intelligent.

I would argue that for most jobs once you hit the basic intelligence requirements of that job, other attributes such as commitment and work ethic are far more important than higher intelligence.

The rare, authentic OGB example of the Strawman Fallacy.

Just to be clear, the example of 2&2's discriminatory hiring practices is in no way the product of implicit bias. Y'all are talking past each other like crazy. 2&2 keeps posting examples of cultural and experiential bias -- viz. hot grill, soccer, asian women drivers, not hiring women that might become pregnant -- arguing (correctly) that these aren't examples of implicit bias even though no one said they were.

2&2 and BKF, any thoughts about my responses to you above?

You'll find no quarrel here. We've all got a evolutionarily cultivated instinct to herd with those we perceive to be like for security. Denying that is silly.

The degree to which that instinct (subconscious) or active discrimination (conscious) determines outcomes is the debate.

Why? If it isn't even big enough to be conscious, what is wrong with having your life experiences impact your interactions? I thought we were supposed to embrace diversity.
Both of those are valid and logical thoughts about implicit bias. What both of you need to consider is that your surroundings since birth have influenced your implicit bias - school, parents, the media you choose to consume and the media you subconsciously absorb. So your implicit bias isn't necessarily anyone's fault, and it isn't necessarily evolutionarily or genetically derived.

A liberal white person could develop implicit negative bias associations with black faces and names by working in an area with a television that shows programs reflecting negatively on black people, even if they didn't purposefully watch or consciously agree with the programming.

I would argue the opposite; the most successful (profitable) small business owners are those who make informed decisions using their anecdotal experience and instincts.

Anyways, I deleted that last post to cut out the snark. I am actually interested in a response from 2&2. Not sure if I am for some reason on ignore or he was just more interested in responding to Doofus' posts.

Response to which post? If you asked me something I didn't see it.
