MBB Game 15: @ UNC-ch - Wednesday 9pm- ACCN

It’s a lot easier to pick back up after a 20+ minute stoppage when you have fans behind you. Both teams were rolling before that, but only one continued it afterward. UNC ratcheted everything up while we lost our momentum.

Not blaming the stoppage, it just happened to coincide with the turning point. Closing out games on the road is tough for a reason. As Forbes mentioned in the presser: Everyone wants to talk about UNC’s record, but they haven’t lost a game at home.

McCray is redshirting the rest of the season and intends to transfer from Wake. That one still stings. We never got the chance to see what he could do for a full game. It sucks.
This is not verified. He is posting RTQ stuff and is getting NIL money. He’s just redshirting. If he was transferring he could’ve left in December and be on another team right now.

Deacons played tough for 30 minutes leading 64-63 until there was an extended stoppge in play for a medical issue in the stands. Over the next 3:36 the Deacs committed three turnovers and were outscored 12-3. Ballgame. They never got closer than 6 down thereafter. The primary problems were a lack of second half defense, evidenced by UNC shooting 60%/50%/83% and points off turnovers. When an opponent scores 32 points off 15 turnovers, for a 32-8 disadvantage, you can kiss victory goodbye. A lot of stupid and careless by the starting lineup.
This about sums it up. Was there tonight and thought we were in the driver’s seat at about the 12 minute mark in the 2nd half (and as an aside, Forbes is the man…walked down and talked to someone for a good while right behind the bench and witnessed some up close coaching by him. I really like his style and how he coaches the team up throughout the game). Anyway, then came the ~15 min. stoppage because of the medical issue in the stands and we came out of that pause pretty flat and never recovered. It also didn’t help that UNC hit dagger after dagger down the stretch and the crowd got into it a lot as a result. A guy behind me was referring to Damari as the ‘crowd silencer’ because he just kept hitting big shots in the 2nd half. But when we didn’t answer UNC’s 6-0 run and they hit a big corner three after one of our turnovers…the crowd made a difference, I felt and never got quiet again until it was clear they would win.

Two observations:

1) Bacot is going to score against virtually every team he plays, but I thought Bradford did a really nice job defending him in the first half.

2) We need to hire a sports psychologist to be with the team. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a group of players completely change after a bad play, bad call, lucky shot by their opponent, etc. We are way too easily rattled. Cam got rattled with two early fouls and never recovered, Ty started playing pretty sloppy when UNC’s defense intensified around the 8 minute mark, Damari makes a pretty sick move for a jumper in the lane and then has three terrible plays and gets benched for five mins., etc. I’m sure a lot of this isn’t unique to our team, but it does seem like we lose our composure pretty easily at times. We have looked composed in some tough spots this season, but it’s 50/50, IMHO. Would be nice to see us mature down the stretch and see our composure swing more to the 80/20 variety.

Big six-seven game stretch coming up with an opportunity to bounce back and go something like 5-2. If we do that, we are still alive. I’m not giving up on this team. Go Deacs

Hildreth 2 points. He’s totally without talent on the offensive end. Davien can’t handle the ball or guard anybody. Just a spot up shooter from the corner. Outside of Appleby we have no guards. And yet Forbes sits Monsanto for a turnover when he has scored 3 straight possessions.
Don’t understand that either, seems like a different standard for Hildreth than Monsanto. Hildreth was horrendous and yet was allowed to keeping jacking up horrible shots the first 7 minutes of the game.

Ya gotta give credit to UNC fans. We have been getting ill at Wake games for decades without being able to help our team. We outta be able to learn from this.

Great analysis by Forbes (what would you expect the guy is sharp duh): Damari, Cam and Ty played sped up.

They sped us up. Frantic, hectic, big crowd, OMG got to go way too fast. Lots of NBA guys talk about how the game slows down.

For WF, not slowed down at all.

"I can't hear Childress."

Does he know how bad he sounds as an announcer - we cannot hear you, mumble, Shaq-style mumble mumble.

There were a bunch of empty seats and the student section and band were tiny.

The killer was, as usual, two dudes having career highs against us.

All the points about quickness and athleticism are dead on.

We run good sets, and good plays - well coached team. Thin margin for error, as we have to play well and execute to win. Not going to get a lot of deflections etc.

But we look like a bunch of stiffs out there.

UNC with Davis, Love and Black are flying around and we are plodding. I don't trust Marsh to stop a penetrator, as he is too slow, for example.

He was okay. I liked that he was objective and praised UNC when appropriate without slobbering all over them like nearly every other announcer out there. I'm sure it wasn't easy for him to call a Wake loss on the road at UNC.

Yeah I thought he was fine. I read some twitter comments complaining that he was too complimentary of UNC. If it really bothers some, mute the TV and cue up the Wake radio feed (I do it often).

Forbes said the crowd was "impressive," so I am just going off of that. He would know.
I would know too. I was there. It was ok I guess. The lower bowl was probably 2/3 full and the upper was probably 1/2 full. They got loud a couple times but I would not call it intimidating at all. They have an equivalent of fan man now and it was the typical Carolina wine and cheese crowd while also missing a lot of students.
