Official 2022-23 College Basketball Thread: UCONN - One Shining Moment

VMI got beat up in the portal this off-season. The Curfman kid who dropped like 25 against us went to Marshall, Stephens went to the Mocs, and Bonham went to Florida. They're all having good to great years at their new school.

A little impressive that VMI only went 9-9 in the Socon last year

VMI is next to impossible to recruit to. Lexington, VA is a teeny town off of I-81, VMI is a military school with all of the limitations on social life as Army and Navy without the cache, and VMI has a documented racist past, which doesn't help. VMI has more than 9 conference wins once in the last 25 seasons. Last year's VMI coach, Dan Earl, knows what he is doing and has now moved on to Chattanooga, where he will thrive. FWIW, Dan Earl's brother, Brian, is crushing it at Cornell.

Yes, I know, was just saying that seems like the talent they had on that team should have translated to a winning record in the Socon.

And VMI has an ugly and stark campus. While cross town, W&L has a gorgeous little campus.

Socon is a pretty tough conference, but understand the point.

Not to get too wonky about 2022 VMI (I was all over their games last year), but they were 9-7 in the Socon, and were headed for a top 3 finish, and Jake Stephens hurt his ankle. He missed their last two regular season games, VMI lost both, including a loss at cellar-dwellar WCU. Stephens was still hobbled for the Socon Tourney. VMI was legit last year, absent that injury they would have had a better finish to the season (lost 6 of their last 7).

Not even across town. W&L is next door to VMI. In fact you drive through W&L to get to the main entrance to VMI.
Yeah, it's been years since I've been there. Last time was when we played at VMI when Odom was still coach.

99% of Jao's lack of contribution is due to his injury. It only heals if you don't work it too much, it's super painful, and robs you of your athleticism.

Once he is fully healed I have no concerns about his ability to lead this team for the next 2-3 years. Hopefully he can get a medical redshirt.

That was my reading of the grounds at the bottom of a cup of coffee. Ituka's injury would heal with rest and he wouldn't be athletic until it did heal. In the meantime, he could play, but he would be physically unable to play well.

I was surprised to hear Forbes say he could play the other day. I would guess it would be better for him to shutdown and go rest/treatment/rehab until the knee recovers. But, I'm not his doctor nor am I him, so he, his doctors and the coaches need to figure out the best course of action.

Ty Appleby 2K Watch

Tyree Appleby now has 1839 career points.

Averaging ~18/game right now.

That puts him at 2000 points in about 9 games... Which would be the home game vs. GT on February 11th.

Quite a few schools have documented racist pasts, including MSD. Highly doubt it is having a major effect on VMI's recruiting.

FS1 is doing their commercial-free all-access broadcast of Minnesota at Ohio State. You get to hear everything going on in the huddle. Pretty interesting perspective.

Idea: Instead of meaningless home games against USC Upstate, Hampton, etc. the Big 4 should have a November series at the Greensboro Coliseum every year where on a Thursday and Friday night each Big 4 team plays a NC mid major. Like Thursday night Wake - App and Duke - Elon and then Friday night UNC - UNCG and State - ECU.

Serves a few purposes:

1. Maintains cultural connection to Big 4 hoops and GSO
2. Makes a lot of Q4 games into Q3 being neutral instead of home
3. Playing in state teams is fun and draws more eyeballs

Would love to see this put together. Who says no?

Yes they do, but VMI is currently under scrutiny for alleged racist and sexist behavior. The Governor of Virginia ordered a study a couple of years ago that established there are still sketchy things going on on post. I am not Black but I would definitely think twice about going to VMI right now if I were. (Source: my husband is a VMI grad)

It's a great idea. It's not a new one though.

I'd be all for an annual 4 and 4 team event that pits ACC vs. SEC. Make it two games in back-to-back days and that's even better.

I think many years ago, I suggested that Greensboro Coliseum do a Big Four vs. NC schools event in which Wake, Duke, State, and UNC play other teams from NC in a similar format.

I took an impromptu visit to W&L while looking at colleges. A student volunteered to give me a quick tour. When we got to the entrance to VMI he told me about VMI's curfew and that W&L guys would hang out there at curfew and pick up the VMI cadet's dates who had walked cadets back to VMI just before curfew.
