MBB Game 21: @ Pitt - Wednesday - 7 pm - ACCN

I don't dislike Capel. I just think it's funny that you think he's been a successful head coach when the same record at Wake Forest would result in you saying he's garbage.

He's been to the NCAAs 3 times in 13 seasons as a head coach. That isn't good for Oklahoma or Pitt.

He was also fired in disgrace for the shit he did at Oklahoma... Which was bad enough that he didn't get another head coaching gig for almost a decade.
I don’t think Steve Forbes is garbage at all. He’s a great Coach. Wake has sucked through 5 straight Coaches. Wake’s decades of failure is for other reasons. You are only as strong as your weakest link. Coaching is just one of the factors. We have a good one now. We had a good one with Odom and Prosser and Gaudio as well. And Tacy for that matter. Didnt change the disaster.

I don’t know why I torture myself, but rewatched the game this morning with a cup of coffee (bad combination for any of you with heart trouble…do not recommend) and the slow start and terrible middle part of the 1st half are what killed our chances overall. Sure, missed FTs and Pitt going unconscious from three were unfortunate but we seem to be content crawling out of deep holes we create for ourselves early in the game. That is unacceptable. And we talk a lot about winning the middle eight, but I feel like we rarely do. Maybe I’m wrong.

Beat State. Not giving up on this team.

Perimeter defense has to get better or this is all a moot point. I will say, that despite our terrible defense, Pitt had a sensational shooting night. You don't make 18 3's against anybody unless you're on absolute fire and take a lot of them. Pitt obviously was hot and took 37.
Which is why I don't get the 1-3-1 at all, it just encourages a barrage of threes, especially from the corner with any sort of ball movement. I use that on my 7th/8th grade team because I want the other team to hoist threes because at that age they aren't making them even though they all think they are Steph Curry. I don't know why you'd run that against a college team where the guys can actually shoot, especially when they've been on fire all night already, and it is really tough to rebound out of. Maybe he thought it got us back in the game so take the bad with the good, but those last few possessions were brutal.

Here are the first four Pitt 3's of the game, which set the tone for the evening and convinced Pitt that they weren't going to miss much.

Dudes were wide open for all 4.

What has killed us the last 2 games were stretches in the 1st half of both games where we got down 19 to UVa and 15 to Pitt. From the point after we trailed by 19 and 15, we outscored UVa and Pitt by 10 and 13 points respectively. It's been kind of the reverse from where we were getting big 1st half leads and then hanging on to barely win or lose. Forbes talked about how we played good for 40 minutes against Clemson, against UVa and Pitt, we've played pretty good for probably 30 minutes and badly for 10. It takes 40 minutes against good teams.

One thing I think we need to some kind of continuity from one year to the next, which that is a problem throughout college basketball with the "one and dones" and transfer portal. However, I think it's hard to build an identity on defense especially when 75 percent of your team is new each year. I think this is a pretty good team, but the margin for error in making the NCAA tournament is much less than it used to be. Heck, there was a time a .500 ACC record got you in the dance a lot of times. Taking care of business against State at home and then winning in Durham for the first time since I was still in my 20's sure would help.

Anyone remember Simon Beard for WFU soccer in the late 80's? Probably not. Anyway, he had this sort of signature move that was like a hesitation scissor-step (my description) when carrying the ball down the left sideline.

Looks like Cam has adopted that in recent games. Must be a British thing.

3 point FGs made differential (due to poor defense) and missed free throws killed us last night. You shouldn't lose too many games where you shoot almost 52 percent.

The problem is defense.

Forbes talks about cleaning up the ball screen stuff, but it's a lot more than that.

Unfortunately, at this point, we are who we are... The best solution is to clean up the stuff Forbes mentions, mix in a little 1-3-1 as a change of pace, and give 100% effort on defense for 40 minutes.

The last couple of games have looked a lot like the 2016-17 season under Manning... Offense looks great, but can't win games without getting stops.

Thought the 1-3-1 looked good last couple times out. The defensive intensity I thought I saw earlier in the season seems to have subsided, though, however.

We sure do leave a lot of three-point shooters open. Wide open.

Yeah and that is bad recipe in today's games. Even a lot of bigs can knock down 3s, it's become such a big part of the game. Defense needs to be played from the outside in with today's game, instead of inside out like it used to be.

All 4 are Andrew Carr on the closeout.

It's almost like they saw something on tape and targeted him. Like, "they have TWO big slow stiffs out there on defense, let's use our quicker PF/quicker bigs to run some action and get wide open 3's." Or similar.

Forbes and others said it's our guards on closeouts and certainly Williamson is getting torched, but they got momentum early by shooting over Carr, who was running at them too late, with a hand up.

There is a dude in the NBA who literally stands there with his 2 hands way up, to distract shooters - perhaps Carr can do that. Can't do worse.

On the surface, yes, and he certainly has a hand in the 3's. I'm not especially happy with anyone's defense in these sequences. My amateur take:

#1 - Carr is closing out on Monsanto's man because Monsanto has drifted into the lane to do...nothing (Carr's man drove the lane and Carr defended it, then sprinted to the corner)
#2 - Carr and Ty do not communicate. Certainly blame to Carr but an assist (not in a good way) to Ty
#3 - Ty does not pick up his man in transition, Carr leaves his man to stop the ball, pass to the corner, 3 ball
#4 - Monsanto does not hustle back in transition, leaving Cam to choose between staying with his man or stopping the ball, which in turn leaves Carr to try to guard two guys 10 feet apart, bucket.

Yeah Carr was there on the guy for all four of them, but I don't think any were his fault 100%, and several were just Damari.

A lot of times when we go to the 1-3-1 it seems way to casual, guys just shuffling back and forth to show a different look on defense. When we played with a lot higher intensity in the second half it seemed to work better and we at least trapped some ball handlers. That said, I’m not sure we can really count on that as a solution with our very limited depth.
