GT Game Thread

Is Griffis the next Hartman?
Probably not, but to place the entire blame on his shoulders after the GT fiasco is not totally accurate.
The overall performance of both the D-Line and the O-Line were equally to blame. Their performance harkened back to the first two years of Clawson's tenure.
The GT quarterback had all day to throw and was rarely rushed on his passing attempts. Griffis SELDOM had time to set his feet before the pocket collapsed.
Placing 100% of the blame on the quarterback is a standard tradition that does not apply to the GT game.

Clawson: “It’s a problem. I told him (Griffis) last week that his clock has to speed up, and the defenses are going to speed up as we get into ACC play. It’s all Power 5 teams the rest of the way. It didn’t happen. Credit to them. They rushed us. They had some blitzes, but it’s a four-week problem. We’re holding onto the ball too long.”

Clawson: “Yeah. I’m figuring we’re heading to overtime. Again, it’s first down. Throw it away. Cut your losses. The play broke down and he got flushed. Just throw it away. Don’t force it and we’ll come back on second down. I appreciate the competitiveness, but at times you have to cut the losses and live for another down."

Clawson: "I’m just going nuts with the turnovers right now. Those are the five plays I can’t get out of my head. The explosives are a problem, but I don’t think those are what cost us the game. I thought our defense at times did a good job of getting the play down and moving onto the next down."

His entire presser's transcript is available online. I think he's exactly right in his assessment.

it's all telling to me that Kern wasn't the de facto starter post-Hartman as Clawson seems to default to seniority in many such instances, so the fact that there was virtually no chatter about a QB competition or Griffis doing a lot to earn the spot has me pretty concerned about who might be there if Mitch isn't the guy

another important quote:

"John learned, Sam (Hartman) learned and I think Mitch will learn. But it’s agonizing when you go through it. It’s hard. It’ll be a couple of sleepless nights, we’ll look at the film, take advantage of the bye week and try to make some corrections, how we’re doing and who we’re doing it with. Then we’ll come back and we’ve got eight more games.”

Start Kern or Marucci. Flip a coin, doesn’t matter, either couldn’t possibly be worse than Mitch has been over the last two weeks.

As Bush so eloquently put it: ‘Fool me once (ODU), shame on - shame on you. Fool me (GT) - you can't get fooled again.’

Yep! And that's precisely why PhDeac, myself and others are concerned. Thanks for also posting. Are we (Clawson) trying to prove a point, is Kern just that God-awful and/or do we have no Plan B?

Everything about his game is slow, he is slow to process and even if he processes in time he is slow to release, and if he decides to run he is incredibly slow. Like some players you are like wow they are deceptively fast and agile but in this case he is remarkably slow, like get chased down by a DL slow.

Before the season, we all assumed that we had the weapons in place to make any QB look decent. Clearly, that is not the case, but that doesn't mean the offense won't work with someone else. If Kern can anticipate pressure, get the ball of quick, and do a decent slow mesh, then we could at least have a chance to be competitive against Clemson. The Clemson pass rush is going to be light years ahead of Gtech, and the thought of having to watch Griffis deal with that is enough to give all of us concern.

Agreed. And why I think the oft-used comparison to Wolford's trajectory is not a very good one. Two very different skillsets other than general size.

I think we also need to adapt our overall offensive philosophy to what we've got. Our run blocking has oddly been pretty good, and we have a strong defense. Let's use these two weeks to get to a place where we can rely on our strengths instead of continuing to try to put a square peg in a round hole.

Run the ball, shorten the game, then try to stretch the field every once in a while.
I was thinking something like a 6-3 win in double overtime for Clemson.

nothing like giving Clemson a much-needed get-right game

Yep - Slow ball velocity as well

Every time Mitch gets on the field, Kern’s self-confidence hit must be taking a toll on him, with him thinking at this point, “how much do I suck to not be in the game?” Blame should be on coaches for not foreseeing worst case scenario and having contingency plans in place. Risk Management Plan 101.

The o line gave him plenty of time and created over 200 yds rushing.

The defense held GT to 14 earned points (9 points the GT offense was already in field goal position due to turnovers or a bad punt.

The problem is an indecisive QB who doesn't appear to have the physical strengths to play at this level and who also makes critical mental mistakes.

Clawson has to sit Mitch. If he doesn't he risks losing the team due to preferential treatment. If a rb had multiple fumbles in back to back games do you think he wouldn't sit?

One of the best displays of coaching was the 6-6 Birmingham bowl season. We were 4-5 going into @ State, Pitt and @Duke to end the season. We derailed State's season in Raleigh and kept them outta a NY6 bowl, dropped to Pitt and then boat raced the Daniel Jones lead Dukies 59-7 to get to 6-6. Jamie Newman went God mode running the back against Memphis in the bowl game and we finished 7-6.

it's going to take a couple special wins like that to get us to a bowl this year. Clawson needs to make some adjustments and show his chops.

Dun dun dunnnnnnn

Newman's stock was at an all-time high after State, Duke and Memphis.

Looking back, there was a lot of talent on that 2018 squad. Dortch, Hinton, Carney/Colburn, Surratt, Bachman, Scott Wash, Boogie, Luke Masterson, Jasir Taylor, Strnad, Bassey. Sciba/Maggio.

Pretty hard to be believe really.
