WF @ VT (10/14), 3:30PM on ACC Network

Really? At the beginning of the year he announced it would be his last season at Wake. On November 15, 2022, when asked if he would return he said, "no shot" before the question could even be completed.
I believe it was after the Syracuse game on the ACCN post-game interview where he said he would play an additional season for $1M. He was a bit tongue-in-cheek, and yet he is getting paid to play at ND. Which would have been after the November 15 comments.

I don't think saying the coaching staff wanted to move on is a good look considering the level of QB play we are seeing now.

I think Hartman's "my last year at Wake" comment back in the spring/summer of 2022 was his belief that after 5 years and graduating it was time to move on from amateur football and give it a shot at the professional level. The NIL thing at that time had not evolved as it did almost overnight into not just million dollar opportunities for a Bronny James or Arch Manning, but also a high-level experienced transfer like Hartmann. Being a golden Domer and all I'm sure played into it somewhat, but he just as likely had an agent and scouts tell him you can make X as a clipboard holder in the NFL next year if you make a roster, or make a guaranteed X+Y at Notre Dame while possibly enhancing your NFL draft status for the following year. Where it used to be you had to leave school and declare for the draft to make a living in sports, now you can do as well or better by making professional moves within the college structure.

And it was an additional season in college not specifically at Wake.

There are many things that "aren't a good look" for WF football right now. Don't think the Hartman situation is one of them.

Even with the current QB mess, the WF staff has a good rep for getting most (but certainly not all) QBs to outplay their HS QB recruiting ratings. Wolford, Newman, Hartman (even Kendall Hinton) all were rated as three stars and they all have done well for themselves due to playing at WF. Throughout last season, Sam Hartman advised he wasn't returning to WF for sixth year. Everyone knew this: coaching staff, the entire WF roster, those that cover the program and fans that pay attention. When it became clear that Hartman's NFL draft grade wasn't going to result in an guaranteed contract, but that several colleges (ND, Auburn, Florida) were willing to pony-up 7 figures+ and possible additional endorsement deals if he performed well, the decision to transfer rather than take a chance with the NFL was easy. Without the extra COVID year, this wouldn't have happened, but Hartman got a sixth year; so, he selected Notre Dame.

At the time Hartman transferred, there was no NIL group backing WF in position to compete with the offers that Sam was getting from ND and SEC schools. Not sure, but even today, I don't think the RTQ collective and/or any other entity backing WF is in position to throw around 7 figures for one year to one athlete to play anything for WF. That is a shit-load of money. Further, it's arguable from Sam's comments and those that know him that even if an OG Board collective had scrounged up 7 figures, that Sam would not have reversed his previous position and returned to WF. Sam spent five years at WF. He graduated, and he wanted to get paid to play football, with the NFL an iffy proposition at best, Sam took the ND offer and has done very well for himself, which is a great thing (and I would argue a great thing for WF indirectly), given that an NFL future is far from clear. There never was any realistic scenario that Hartman would return to WF for the 2023 season.

This is a tired topic that should be put to bed.

I posted almost the same sentiments just a few minutes before you did (you may have still been composing when I hit "post reply"); only mentioning to emphasize how much my viewpoint aligns with yours on this; i.e. not a factor in the current negative situation/time to move on.

oI think Elko is gone this off-season. Guy has proved it at a high level in major programs and has shown that he can run a program successfully. Michigan state particularly looks like a natural fit.
So no chance now he comes to Wake....😁
Josh Gattis would be a good hire IMHO.

Do we wait as long as we did with Grobe? Maybe Clawson has done what he could, be thanked and honored, get an AD position, and enjoy his millions with more free time. Personally, I'd take that over leaving as a failure after likely 4-5 losing seasons....

Man, I'm down on the Deacs this year. Awful season so far, with no real signs of things getting better. That said, I definitely and not understanding the Clawson hate. We haven't been bad in 7 or 8 years. Maybe we have a bad year. Clawson will get it right.

Is this the guy that was so down on the baseball team, even when playing well this year? I get my 80s Deacs mixed up.

I say this as someone who loves Josh as a person, counts him as a friend and has rooted for him at every job. What makes you think, after Miami particularly, that he would be better than Clawson? If we wanted an alum, I’d argue Brad White is more proven. And I’ll just echo everyone else who has said I find this very premature.

Way too early for Clawson discussion. At least let the season end and confirm your belief that this will be a losing football season.

The Supreme Court ruled that compensation for players was only fair given the enormous profits the universities were receiving. Paying the players a fair wage for their efforts was considered unaffordable by the universities, despite large financial benefits offered by the media to broadcast games. That money was filling the pockets and coffers of the universities. However that option would have provided a uniform means of compensation that was equitable to the players and would have minimized the discrepancy of compensation provided the players. Bags of money would still be a part of the game but it could lead to consequences. NIL was the answer the universities preferred. University participation was prohibited, allowing each school to continue enriching themselves. Collectives were formed to compensate the players with the cost of compensation being absorbed by fans, alumni and businesses. The NCAA and the universities ceded control of the matter and the wild west/pay for play ensued. The highest bidder wins became the point of recruitment. The inherent disadvantages of such an arrangement need not be addressed nor discussed.

Not a bad deal for the Universities and the NCAA. That TV money stays in their pockets and coffers and the cost of player compensation fell to the fans, alumni and business. Unchecked capitalism where anything goes. That's a racket the Mob would love if they could only get a piece of the action.

P.T. Barnum was right.

While Currie and Clawson have done a good job, I think they were caught off guard by NIL and focused money donations to facilities. Yes, those were needed to keep up with the others, but they were left behind in the football race. Seems like there are 3 groups of coaches these days, the traditional and stubborn (which Clawson fits into), the cheat at all costs and to hell with the rule book, and the third that sees the NIL horizon and willing to push it as far as they can. At this point I’ll gladly take #3.

I don’t think you’re reading this right.

Most of our big investments in facilities were lined up before NIL came on the scene.

I don’t think either Currie or Clawson are in that stuff in traditional mode, in fact, I think they would love to have a large NIL fund to help utilize, we are just much more behind the eight ball because of our size and donor base.

I’ve seen this several times, but I don’t believe that our staff chose facilities over NIL, we’re just having to play catch up.

I wonder what RTQ has done to leverage donors. I know about them because of this board but none of my friends do. I understand they may be hitting up DC members, but those are usually people who can take advantage of tickets because of proximity. There doesn’t appear to have been outreach to all alums with a clear message, unless I missed it.
