duke Game Thread (Thursday, 7:30, ESPN)

I just checked NCAA.com and it says we are 93 out of 130 in Red Zone offense, so I might be confused about the stat indicated on the broadcast. We were 2nd from the bottom in some similar Red Zone stat.

In other news, we are tied for 123 out of 130 for most fumbles lost.

No judgement here...Gophers attendance gets criticized by some. With Wake only having an enrollment of just over 5,000, are most of the fans in the stands grads? Or do you also get some regional/locals that attend?

Minnesota has the advantage of an enrollment over 50,000 and being the flagship university of the state. Our disadvantage compared to other big ten teams is there's a lot of competition for the entertainment dollar here. We have all the big 4 pro sports plus MLS and WNBA yet our metro area is also only 3.5 million (maybe the smallest with all 6 of those pro sports). The huge popularity of the Vikings I think also hurts Gopher football attendance. Plus there's a lot of other entertainment stuff going on with Minneapolis being a regional hub type city (most theaters per capita outside Broadway, concerts, etc). Add in some very rough football years over the last 40 years and our 52,000 seat stadium is perfect.

Wake fans are a mix of grads and locals. Our small size obviously hurts but also our alumni base is more and more scattered across the US than ever before. Wake used to be very regional. Good chunk of my class were NC people. The school made the decision to become more national and many more current students from outside NC. Could be a problem long term as the older wake grads start to pass away

Also, international students were an oddity back in the day. Now they are 10%+ of enrollees. Much less likely to be football fans as students and to support the team as alumni.

Red zone scoring percentage is touchdowns + FGs / total trips; WF is 80%, T-91st of 133.
Red zone touchdown percentage is touchdowns / total trips; WF is 42.9%, T-130th of 133.

(on principle, don't use NCAA.com; this site is much better)

We have increased international student population too. But I think that's a pretty small factor for us compared to the other ones I mentioned.

So, in short, we are in the bottom 10% at holding onto the football, and when we do, we are in the bottom 2% at sticking it into the end zone.

Oh, and we’re bottom 30% or so in explosive plays of 20 yards or more per game. The trifecta!

Ordinarily fumbles lost is a variable stat but the fumbles we have (quarterback dropping the football into rushing defenders) makes me feel like it’s more predictive than most teams lol

I get it that back in the day this was a difficult job. But now. Keep that excuse.

We have top notch facilities. We are a top notch academic school. And we apparently now have enough NIL money to compete. Our coaches And administrators are paid handsomely to figure out a way to make it work.

We're not fsu. But there's no reason a new coach at a place with horrible facilities like Duke should eclipse us in his first year. Elko has shown us how stuck in the mud we are - ten years in!! He beat us last year with our "good" players in his first year. And beat us this year with a third string true freshman QB and his second team across the field. Duke facilities aren't as good as most high schools. And they have the worst fan support of anyone in the conference.

Save the excuses and let's compete. Otherwise let's drop to the southern conference and play Furman and Wofford every week.
I think it's called shit or get off the pot! :)

And therefore a system that treats turnovers as variable is probably over-valuing our offense

I’m not a Wake grad. I grew up cheering for Wake and now I’m able to go see them live. I spent 20+ years going to games with free tickets or cheap tickets. I’ve bought season tickets for the last 2 years cause they are so cheap. I will probably continue doing this just cause it’s a fun Saturday afternoon to go hang out with my family and friends. Anyways, I may go to 1 or 2 Wake basketball games but I go to the majority of HPU games. My wife is pushing me to get season tickets for baseball. That’s probably happening pretty soon. A bunch of people on here are probably familiar with Kyler at the ticket office. He is very attentive and helpful whenever I have a question. I believe that is how they are getting local people to buy the tickets.

Trouble filling stadium and what they do aren't even close to the same thing. Plus. They have twice the enrollment that we do. Apples and oranges
Duke has a little more than 1,000 more undergrads than we do.

I'm in the construction industry and I see a decent amount of wake bumper stickers and flags in the surrounding counties Wilkes, Surry, Davidson ect. Many there are probably more apt to go to Winston for a game than brave the Raleigh traffic to go to a Carolina or Duke game and there's not much other big events that go on in these counties so Saturday football is a good draw .Lots of App fans too in this area but Boone is getting really difficult to get into on game days.

It felt like we were a couple years from really grabbing some bandwagon fans in football with our trending up which is why this year really sucks. Wake needs local bandwagon fans as the alumni base in the area wouldn't fill the student section.

I am not a Wake grad, but have been a Wake fan and attending WF football and basketball games for 45 years because my father (also not a WF grad) was a huge Wake fan. He especially liked Brian Piccolo and Bones McKinney. My stepfather graduated from Wake Law and I have a step brother who also is a Wake grad. They have been football season tix holders for many years. I live and work in W-S and have been a football season tix holder for the past 2 years and have also attended 8-10 basketball games over that same timeframe. I see more WF hats/shirts, car decals, yard flags, etc now than I ever have. The fanbase has definitely grown and much of that can be attributed to the success in football during the Grobe/Clawson years. Last season's baseball team's success has also helped to grow the fanbase. I plan to purchase baseball season tix soon. With all of that being said, I fear this football season isn't going to help and will most likely hurt Wake's fanbase growth. After the loss to Duke, I am just disgusted with football/Clawson/Griffis. Being a glutton for punishment, I will be there next weekend with my gf's daughter, who is a State grad.

I'm so tired of reminding you that this IS who we are. You act like Aaron Rodgers is on the bench and it's Clawson's fault for not playing him. Geez. We are doing the best we can this season with a seriously weak roster on offense. When we have to trick the defense to get better than a 2 yard run just forget it. We were only in a position to win because Duke sucked worse than we did. Luckily for them we remembered who we are in the 4th qtr. A pretty weak team like ours should not be going to a bowl no matter what delusional fans think. Everyone should be thanking Sam Hartman for honestly making us better than we were for the past 3 years. We are irrelevant this season, and it's not the first time. We should be thankful that Bill Dooley, Jim Grobe and Dave Clawson somehow managed to make us relevant for a few years in each of their terms as coach. They made the players and fans believe Wake Forest was able to compete with anybody. It's a fabulous trick, but it's not true. Neither players, coaches or fans have to accept it, but they must understand it to survive and move on to the next game. Stop whining and just be loyal Demon Deacons. There's pride in that. Next year be hopeful again.
Bill Dooley?? Had one good year (1992) and knew he was losing everyone to graduation. So he retired. We have a lot of talent on offense this year, but not at QB.

They have double the total enrollment. I get that undergrad is more likely to follow sports. I just looked at total enrollment

Dooley was 7-4 and 6-4-1 his first 2 years and we would have played in bowl games both years under the current system. We could have been in the Independence Bowl in 1988 if App hadn’t been pussies and gone for the tie. Cost us a bowl game and them the DIAA playoffs.
We made the Independence Bowl in 1992 and finished ranked 25
