Notre Dame, 3:30pm NBC/Peacock

Things aren't really that different for us. We have always been at a disadvantage. We have been good by finding under-recruited and undersized guys and developing them into players after 2-3 years. And, utilizing an innovative offense that maximizes our talent. Pre-Clawson we had a really innovative offense under that OC that I can't remember - before a bigger program poached him.

With NIL and instant transfer availability it is going to be more difficult to keep and develop players. We are going to have to adapt and recruit under the radar guys in the portal that can contribute right away and we are going to have to do that every year. And we are going to have to develop and adapt an interesting offense to maximize our talent and hide our weaknesses. Things that we have always had to do.

The difference to me and I hope I’m wrong is now, the make up of teams can change greatly in one season. Is it a coincidence that the 2 teams that will play for the ACC title this year are the 2 teams that used the portal and NIL money to their advantage the most this year?

Maybe that is where our differences lie, I look at our record against top 25 programs and realize that just isn’t who Wake is.
No it isn’t, but most of the programs in our conference are those type programs. Even SMU coming in next year has money to burn.

Ok so against Clemson and FSU I'll grant you that but what advantage does NC State, Duke or Georgia Tech have over us.... And almost Old Dominion?
A good QB and our season looks very much like Techs and Dukes seasons are turning out, State is having a good season and will certainly have more NIL money than us. Don’t forget, we not have to get players, we have to get players that meet our academic standards, State not so muc.

Could only watch in snatches. I was encouraged in the first half to see us show some life and some creativity in moving the ball. We ran more trick plays in the first half than in the rest of Clawson's tenure combined.

Our OL and secondary are just so ineffective compared to previous years. I guess certain of our DBs are pro prospects but rn I'm at a loss to understand that.

We've had some crappy luck with scheduling. Hartman aside, we beat ND with any of our last three squads probably.

The announcers were awful. There was never going to be any possible way to avoid the humiliating narrative that this is who Wake really is, and isn't it great that this stud Hartman got the F out of there. C'est la vie.

Nice TD pass up by a hundred effing points with under four to go in Q4. Stay classy Freeman. The onside kick was a nice touch too but that's on us for looking like we'd never seen one before.

I am sick and GD tired of losing to UNC, Clemson, ND. Figure this NIL/portal stuff out or just drop down a level already.

That is all.

Our best D tackle is a transfer from University of Louisana Monroe, I’m not sure academics are the issue.
Clawson literally talked about how it’s not only finding guys in the portal, but guys we can take at Wake because of the academics. Just because Pointer came from Monroe doesn’t mean he wasn’t a good academic, geez.

I just don’t think it’s going to be that different. We should still be able to win 6-8 games a year which I’m completely fine with. We weren’t competing for national championships and we still won’t be.

He said because of credits it’s either guys after freshmen year or grad transfers.

It doesn’t seem to be that way for bball…
Yeah, not sure why that would be different. Problem is according to Clawson a guy that has been somewhere else for a couple of years would lose so many credits because most don’t carryover and count at Wake?

I'm struggling to figure out what exactly our disadvantage is in football? Sure. We're not a huge school. And we require you to be a student. But we are far from the only school like that. And to be fair, there are a ton more majors to choose from than my time at Wake. Gotta be some fluff in there for these dudes. We have top notch facilities. We've had recent success. And a great education to offer. All in a supportive environment. We're not going to rip a kid for a mistake etc. The narrative in years past when we had high school facilities should be over. Some of this narrative feels self imposed relative to our past and not our present or future.

You mean Troy Calhoun at Air Force?

Yes he can really coach an offense and is a good HC, too.

It makes sense. I just wonder why Forbes doesn’t seem to be running into similar issues.

I don’t get this either. Take a guy who is a RS Sophmore, he would have been in school for 3 years and have two more years of eligibility, so even if he loses a bunch of credits, he should still eventually be able to graduate and max out his eligibility. Also you have guys like Santino who graduated as RS sophomores.

Forbes seems to be a guy that puts his head down and gets to work. If anyone should be complaining it's him. He took over a dumpster fire, with crap facilities, got shafted by the committee two years ago, and seems to be having a lot of injury issues. But he just gets to work. Dave seems more content to complain- but maybe I'm just salty right now

Bottom line, we can debate whether we’re at a bigger disadvantage or what our disadvantages are, but it sure ain’t getting any easier and our football staff better start figuring things out, so a bad year doesn’t turn into a bad decade or worse. All you have to do is look at our hoops program as an example of that.
