2023-2024 NCAA Men's Basketball Thread

Yeah, I think this is the right answer. The best thing for the conference is for UVA, Wake and Clemson to play their way into the dance. After yesterday, stick a fork in NC St, Miami and VT. And I still don't get all the Clemson love that Lunardi has when they've played so poorly in ACC play. They were awful again yesterday and were lucky to beat a bad Cuse team. And wtf is up with those white and gold ND unis? Navy is your primary color, so wear it and look better. But that game could have been worse. VT could have worn their orange unis with maroon trim, so both teams could have been unsightly. Also didn't care for the Miami unis. I'm getting too old.
All the Clemson love is most likely coming from two Quad 1 wins in the non-con vs SC & @ Alabama and Tuesday’s road win at Q1 and Top 5 UNC.

If it's any consolation, the win against State moved the Deacs up to #28 in BPI. It does seem strange to win a game and move down in the rankings.

I track BPI (28), kenpom (28), torvik (29) and net (36). For much of the year there has been a 20 point difference in the Wake Forest rankings. At present there is an eight point difference from #28 to #36. KPI and SOR are both in the low 40's. Deacs are getting there.

I listened (unfortunately) to one of the Lunardi rants about Clemson. He sounded giddy talking about how conference records mean nothing regardless of how weak the ACC is. He then said they had a winning record in quad 1 games (they are 4-4), and that they have no Quad 3 or 4 losses (they lost to Ga Tech at home which is a quad 3).

Don't get me wrong, wins against Alabama, UNC, TCU, and South Carolina are nice. And they have a very soft remaining schedule (we are their only remaining Q1 game) so I expect their conference record will correct itself. But it sounded to me like Lunardi is really, really excited to keep hammering the "ACC only deserves 3, maybe 4 bids" narrative and Clemson is the chosen one because they have Big12 and SEC wins.

Ugh, that made me look up the ACC quad records and it's just infuriating. Our NC State win is ranked identically to Clemson barely beating Davidson. And we've had 3 Quad 1 games, rest of the ACC has had an average of 7.4 quad 1 games, and only 2 teams haven't gotten a home Quad 1 game in the entire conference, us and UVA. Infuriating.

yeah and don't tell me members of the committee don't listen to his narratives to help inform their decision making.

Clemson is 16-7 against the 16th hardest schedule in the country. They’ve got 4 Q1 and 4 Q2 wins. They’re 29th in NET, 30th in KP, and 31st in Torvik.

That’s a no doubter NCAAT bid.

I see the "it seems strange to win a game and move down in the rankings" a lot, and I don't understand why it's so confusing. I'm not sure if us being bad for so long has warped people's brains a bit, but when you are a good team you have higher expectations than "just win".

Nobody here would think it's weird that we moved down if we beat Louisville by 1, why does beating State by 4 prompt confusion? The spread was -8.5 and we won by 4, of course we moved down. State played us tough, no doubt, but they just aren't very good. We ARE good, so more is expected of us.

It makes perfect sense to me that State moved up and we moved down - we didn't do what was expected. The good news is that we don't need helps from a metrics standpoint imo. Just get wins and that takes care of itself.

I think y'all are being obtuse if you think just because a team has the same overall/conference record as Wake, that we are equal - we just aren't, especially at home. Y'all are smarter than this. Not all wins are created equally, and not all win margins are created equally. Wake has 8 20+ point wins (and two 19 point wins), while State has 8 double-digit wins total.

Sycamores ranked for the first time since Larry Bird played in Terre Haute:

FWIW, Indiana State is 22-3. Their coach Josh Schertz is awesome. When Schertz was hired in the Spring of 2021. Indiana State had lost every productive player after the prior coach, Greg Lansing was fired, including Jake LaRavia. With a completely bare cupboard and only one NCAAT appearacne in decades, rebuilding Indiana State seemed difficult, if not impossible. Instead, in year 3, the Sycamores are ranked and play a high octane run and gun style that is entertaining and super-successful. ISU leads the nation in Effective FG%. Every Power Conference school with an opening has to consider Schertz.

Guess college kids don't like playing on the road.

Why does Wake never get to have another home game on a short rest
Seems like every ACC team gets 3 straight home games (Duke just had theirs tonight) except for Wake. Heck I think we have back to back home games just once

We have back to back home games 2 more times this year!

Hopefully you'll be able to read the above from The Athletic. In addition to a great story, he has Piedmont Bible and High Point U connections, so not unreasonable to think he may end up back in this area some day.

30 years ago today, John Chaney interrupts Calipari's press conference and ends up saying "I will kill your fucking ass" to Calipari.... I miss John Chaney...

That was a good explanation. Thanks.

Seems like it is straight out of the gambler's handbook. Everyone doesn't gamble. That could be why you see it and hear it a lot.

Lunardi’s bracket today has Clemson making the national championship game. So the ACC blows but the 7th place team is going to the natty. Makes perfect sense.
You do realize that the brackets that show the outcomes are not his simulations right? He just puts out a bracket and the people run it through simulators.
