2024 Races (Non-president)

Based on the results so far (~50% in) I doubt Schiff's campaign "boosting" Garvey's name ID made much of a difference. Porter is way behind Garvey and his vote total aligns pretty closely to Trump's. Obviously that analysis could change pending additional results coming in through mail in ballots.

How dare you suggest that Republicans might show up and vote for their candidate in an open primary !

Not sure how much name recognition Steve Garvey has with anybody under 60.

Any baseball fan, or sports fan in general, in Southern California over 45 should absolutely know who Steve Garvey is. And they hated him in San Francisco too, so basically any sports fan in the state over the age of 45 should know who Steve Garvey is.

Does it even matter if they knew him? I figure most voters at this point are simply going and voting straight ticket. While Schiff's strategy of paying for ads to get Garvey's name out more is cynical, I doubt it had any large effect on the results. Unfortunately, it just seems like Porter got beat by a rather significant margin.

Garvey retired in 1987 when 45 year old voters were 8. The most prominent CA baseball players for people age 45-60 are like Piazza, Bonds, and Gwynn.

Yeah, so ? You're saying you would have no name recognition of a professional player, who played in your home state, was a perennial All-Star and former MVP, who played for 20 years and retired when you were 8 ?

Extremely cynical because he’s gonna win the general in a landslide, but as you note, the Porter voters didn’t turn out (or went Schiff) when it counted.

Garvey won NL MVP 50 years ago.

Years ago when I was a kid, I remember reading an article in Sports Illustrated about Garvey and his wife getting a divorce and his wife was quoted as saying something like, "Steve and I will be driving and he will ask me where I want to go to dinner. I want him to be a man and say I'm taking you home to make love!." 12 year old me read that and was like "holy shit!!!"

No one knows who Terry Pendleton or Dale Murphy are.

Family Feud is filmed on the south side of Atlanta, btw. Steve Harvey lives in Buckhead, on the river. Bought Tyler Perry's mansion there.
