Billy Edwards is transferring?!?!?!

We don't even know to what extent they tried to improve the QB room in the offseason did we? It's not like they're gonna come out and say if they tried to get a portal target and failed.. especially if it was just someone to try and improve competition at the second string spot.
No, but players in the portal tend to say who offered them, and we didn't see anything about a single QB. So unless every QB we approached chose to keep it secret, then we can be pretty confident that the staff didn't search for a QB in the portal.

I think both our insiders and IIRC, even Clawson himself explicitly said they weren't looking to add a QB in the offseason.

I think the staff likes Kern but were just totally, completely confident that Griffis would be good and based on Clawson's postgame presser, they are perplexed at how bad he's been.

Fans calling for the backup QB when it’s a 5 star freshman is one thing (Cade Klubnik, Caleb Williams at Oklahoma). Doing it in Wake’s situation this year is quite another thing.

A decent chunk (not all) of Griffis’ issues are related to his inexperience, particularly in the need to make quick decisions when his OL is blocking like shit. Throwing a similarly talented and similarly inexperienced Kern out there instead of Griffis is pretty unlikely to fix anything in that regard.

I’m not saying that fans’ criticism of Griffis is out of line or wrong or whatever. I just think this team is more likely to get to 6 wins and a bowl game by hoping Griffis learns from mistakes eventually than by throwing Kern out there.
This seems a pretty good take. We have reports that Griffith's accuracy in practice has been very good. He has experience in that setting. He needs to translate that to gameday or he will be replaced.
Edit: "Griffith's"? Good God, really?! Just ignore anything I say on this topic with that. Ugh

No one is saying that. We are saying that there were some incorrect evaluations in regard to the QB room. The coaches may have wrote off what Edwards did because he was playing against 3rd stringers in the spring game, and rather than saying there was going to be an open competition to be the backup, they said the depth chart is what it is. If Griffis is the best QB we have this season, then the coaches have done a terrible job of evaluating talent and were totally unprepared for Sam to leave.

There was no intentional misevaluation, but to have been set at the QB position for 5 years and not have a decent successor in place is pretty BS. It's not like we are rolling out new starters every year, this staff had time to find and develop a QB who could be successful when surrounded by elite WRs and they failed to do that.
Just stop. The coaches didn't write off shit because of the Spring game. Your only knowledge of Edwards was from the Spring game. The coaches had daily practices to view. If Edwards had proven himself better, his spot on the depth chart would have reflected that.

Using revisionist history here, but what QB (who didn't commit for piles of NIL cash) would you have liked Wake to pursue? Seems like most of them that Wake had a realistic chance of landing are also terrible?

Here's a list of options: https://www.on3.com/transfer-portal/top/football/2023/?position=qb

It may have just been a talking point, but it was communicated that we were planning for Sam to leave regardless to give Mitch his turn. It did not sound like we were trying hard to convince Sam to stay even when it became obvious he would play one more year.

We don't know a lot about what's going on behind the scenes, in practice, etc. But one of the few things we do know is that the staff decided not to try and improve the QB room this offseason. Based on that, it's pretty much necessarily true that they believed Kern was a viable QB. If they didn't think Kern was playable, it makes no sense they wouldn't have at least tried to address that.

Griffis has not been a viable QB so far this year, so if they continue to trot him out it seems pretty certain it's because they believe he can improve a lot based on what they've seen in practices, not because they think Kern sucks.
Why not both?

Coaches have a daily view of practice and yet they still thought Griffis would be a quality starter is not the endorsement of our coaching staff that you think it is.

Where did I claim that as an endorsement?

You of all people should probably understand that evaluating folks for doing their job is tough to do in a limited window where they don't get to do the actual job under real world pressure. It's not an exact science.

Griffis definitely looked the part against VMI even, he spread the ball around really well that day. I honestly kinda wish Sam had been out a little longer so we could have seen him against a real team sooner, probably would have had the coaching staff a_little_ bit warier going into the offseason.

If our coaches have had 4 years to evaluate Griffis and they thought he would be good, it means their ability to evaluate guys in practice is shit. If their ability to evaluate guys in practice is shit, then maybe they had no clue what they had in Edwards.

They had 3 years, not 4, we're in his 4th year now.

yes famously if a coach does not hit at 100% then it means they are shit

Given the QB's we've recruited and produced over the last decade, I don't think it's a fair assessment to say that the staff can't evaluate guys based off of practice.

Clawson seems legit stumped as to what he is seeing on the field right now from Mitch. I think he has faith in his own scouting/eyes/tape, as well as Ruggiero's. Now we need to figure out what IS going on and see if it can either be fixed, or if we need to move on.

Also, it would absolutely still matter that Duke is getting Gameday this weekend even if Wake was 4-0. That's an immense boon to a program, especially one that has Duke's history.

They are one of, if not THE biggest competitors we face on the recruiting trail, and they have another feather in their cap now.

It's assuredly not good and 100% matters.
