Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

It doesn't matter if anyone watches. They just need the TV market
Nah, subscriptions are going to overtake cable packages as the main way people consume content. TV market doesn’t mean shit if you can’t drive a critical mass of people to pay a monthly subscription to watch your team

When schools change conferences, it typically is pairs (OU/Texas; USC/UCLA; Washington/Oregon). So, if UNC leaves to join the SEC or Big 10, it would be with another school. No doubt that UNC is the ACC's most coveted commodity, and pairing UNC with UVA makes the most sense because it delivers the heart of the Atlantic Coast region. The most common mistake made when selecting expansion targets is "this team is good in football". That is so far down the list in criteria. TCU could play in the college football playoff for 8 years in a row, and Texas would still be the most coveted program for expansion. UNC and UVA to the Big 10 would bother the SEC. UNC and UVA to the SEC would keep the Big 10 out of areas closest to the SEC. The Big 10 is never going to offer NC State or VT; those are secondary schools in those states; it was a battle to get the Big 10 to invite Oregon and Washington, and they delivered their entire northwest.

UNC and UVA are the last really coveted nuggets not in the SEC or Big 10.

There have been plenty of conference moves that weren’t in pairs.

Not really. Teams don't want a conference with an odd number. Also, if UNC were to leave the ACC, they would likely want another school from the ACC to go with them. FSU on the other hand could care less.

Understand that your consistent position is that UVA is not coveted by other power conferences, and that position is simply incorrect.

I’m just saying that the second team doesn’t have to be “paired.” Rutgers and Maryland came to the Big 10 together. They weren’t together previously. UNC could move with anyone.

And the perspective that tv markets matter is the perspective that is incorrect. It’s not 2008.

And why would schools/teams want to leave a conference to just become punching bags to Alabama, UGA, Michigan, Ohio State, etc? Do they really think the playing field will be leveled?

This. small fish in a BIG pond.

Ungood.

Screw 'em. Just as long as Wake can stay in the contracted ACC. Maybe better in the long run. 8 teams just like old times.

It's not like any other conference member besides the sec or big20 can get a CFP title anyway.

Virginia may not the most passionate fan base, but it's still a large fan base - though VT's is roughly the same size and a bit more passionate. But I agree that the SEC wanting UVA is a head scratcher. It does get you a bunch of VA tv markets, but nobody watches UVA football, and the quality of UVA football ain't improving anytime soon. Whereas, UNC is good in football, premier in hoops, and you'd bring in the entire state as a market.
Maybe they need to improve the conference GPA

It’s all about money, brand exposure, etc. Tarholes love being top dog and tradition of ACC but if there is a new car out there- they’re gonna take it and say “thanks for the memories”. They could care less if they go 3-9 in football every year if they’re in the top conference playing Michigan, tOSU, Penn State, USC, Oregon. Would take that vs. going 9-3 in minor league. They’ll always have basketball and that doesn’t really matter what conference you’re in anyways given the tourney set up.

The holes have a new incoming President. Wonder if that will change anything.

They can if they pay. If they want to buy 13 years worth of their media rights back from the ACC then I am happy to let them
Yeah, if one school leaves and pays a billion dollars then that probably means we can pay to have everyone else stay.
