St. Bonaventure Game Thread - Deacs win 77-62 off to 9-2 start

It's a sad day when meeting expectations at Wake Forest means beating a bunch of scrub teams and finishing near .500 in the ACC, while probably being shut out of the post season. Do we need a new term for the step below LOWF?
Beating a bunch of scrub teams like we always do in OOC and finishing 0.500 in the ACC likely gets us in the post-season. We'd have 19 wins. Doing slightly better than that (2 more wins?) might get us into the NCAAs and into the top half of the ACC. Do you realize that?

What if the expectation in year 4 is an NCAA appearance? Is that reasonable?

Seeing as Wake has been to the NCCA's 14 out of the 20 years pre-BZ, I would say that would be the minimum expectation.

I'll need one of the KenPom experts to decree it officially, but 21 wins with this schedule ain't getting us into the Big Dance

We do have a guy on the inside.

That would mean we would have 10 or 11 ACC wins, which would probably make it pretty close. Obviously if we happened to beat Duke or Cuse it would strengthen it.

I'll leave it up to those who know the numbers better than I do, but I'm pretty sure its been shown that:

1) Our OOC schedule is significantly easier than in previous years
2) 19 wins would barely put us on the NIT bubble
3) Top half of a 15 team ACC is not something to crow about.

If we are discussing who is a good fan, I am actively rooting against this team. That makes me a terrible fan. Jeff [Redacted] needs to GTFO. Especially because I think this group of players, with an elite player added, could be pretty damn good.

So, if everything goes really well and we even get a little lucky, we will be back to a "down year" for Wake in Year 4 of the Buzz reign. Do you realize that?

Curious. Has any other ACC program ever hired a coach coming off of three straight losing seasons at his previous school?

Seems unlikely. The Bzztanic has taken us into uncharted waters.

What the hell? Did you PDF your entire diary (Control + F, baby!), or do you really keep a hard copy handy at all times?

Is it possible that we could get back to discussing the game without all the petty pissing contest side-shows? Enough is enough guys.

Per rpiforecast, a regular season record of 21-10 would have us with an RPI of 53 going into the ACC tournament. Right on the bubble but probably needing one tourney win to get a bid.

Seriously? Every pre-season prior to Bz when we saw an individual play like that, people talked about it on the boards and got excited, especially a hot and cold player like Travis. Every pre-season prior to Bz we came out of the OOC schedule usually something like 10-2, winning all the cupcakes. Every pre-season prior to Bz we talked about the resiliency of the team when it happened because frankly...Wake teams have a consistent habit of completely folding during the season under every coach I've ever seen and almost annually.

The reaction to this isn't unusual at all, other than it hasn't happened in 3 years. I'm not sure why the bar now has to be way higher.

10 years prior to buzz. Non-con record, non cupcake wins, Non-con SOS (last two years includes ACC play, couldn't find separate Non-con rank)

09-10: 10-2, @Gonzaga, Xavier, Richmond. SOS-100th
08-09: 13-0, Baylor, @Richmond, @BYU. SOS-265th
07-08: 10-3, BYU. SOS- 303rd
06-07: 9-4, (3 of 4 losses were to top 50 teams, 4th was to #125) Vanderbilt, @Bucknell. SOS-264th.
05-06: 11-2, Wisconsin, Texas Tech. SOS- 250th
04-05: 12-1, Texas, @ New Mexico, @ Temple, Arizona, GW, VCU. SOS-83rd
03-04: 10-1, Cincinatti, Memphis, New Mexico, Indiana. SOS -74th
02-03: 10-1, St. Johns, @Wisconsin, @Richmond. SOS-224th
01-02: 10-4, (all losses to top 70 teams, 2 to top 10 teams) @Arkansas, Fresno State, Minnesota, Marquette, Richmond. Overall SOS- 7th
00-01: 11-1, Kansas, @Temple, @Richmond. Overall SOS-18th

So the bar has always been 10-11 wins with 3+ non cupcake wins against an average SOS of around 180.

Buzz's Non-con schedules have been 305, 283, 286, 322. His overall non-con record prior to this year was 23-18 (one less loss than the 10 years before him) with only 3 non cupcake wins.

This year he is 9-2 with 3 non cupcake wins (I'm being generous with non-cupcake, basically including any team that's within distance of top 100). It's taken him 4 years to get to the bar against the worst non con schedule we've had in a decade. If he gets over the bar by winning the next two he's still scraping against it on the way over.
